Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education from an accredited college or university or equivalent
  • Appropriate State of Ohio teacher certifications/license
  • Training and/or experience in behavioral management techniques
  • Ability to identify, evaluate, and implement program options, auxiliary services, and curricular materials that support the diverse learning needs of students
  • Knowledge of Ohio graduation requirements
  • Experience and Knowledge of standard based grading and flexible learning
  • Knowledge of Work-Based Learning Opportunities

Responsibilities

  • Participate as a member of the instructional team and direct learning activities of students in the attainment of subject, school, and system objectives.
  • Adapt and apply instructional responsibilities to the circumstances of the alternative education program, such as student needs.
  • Plan continuous and flexible educational experiences for pupils, considering student needs and previous learning.
  • Assemble and organize resources related to content assignments.
  • Direct learning activities that align with the goals of the established curriculum, communicating these goals and instructional procedures to students.
  • Provide small group instruction to students enrolled in the alternative school setting.
  • Offer flexible and authentic learning opportunities for students to obtain credits.
  • Employ varied teaching and evaluation styles to facilitate student understanding and critical thinking.
  • Demonstrate competent knowledge of subject matter and its connections to prior and future learning.
  • Develop and modify instructional materials for the students' level of needs.
  • Foster an ability to think outside of the box regarding students' mastery of content.
  • Work individually with students on their caseload to develop individualized progress plans and monitor progress.
  • Keep the alternative school principal informed of situations that may require their involvement.
  • Ensure instructional time is utilized toward academic goals and student efforts are directed accordingly.
  • Facilitate student schedules.
  • Develop, communicate, and maintain consistent classroom discipline strategies that encourage teacher-student interaction, mutual respect, rapport, positive self-image, and self-responsibility.
  • Work with stakeholders to build educational plans for students on caseloads that address behavioral needs.
  • Build positive and appropriate relationships that motivate students to achieve academic and behavioral goals.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with students, parents, colleagues, administration, and the school community.
  • Become acquainted with parents of students and maintain consistent communication regarding their student.
  • Work cooperatively with colleagues.
  • Be an ambitious, enthusiastic, and determined visionary leader, understanding that this program is being built from the ground up and requires an innovative approach.
  • Keep appropriate records, including attendance and disciplinary records for each student.
  • Adhere to all policies of the Board of Education and administrative rules and regulations.
  • Attend all meetings called by the principal or superintendent, unless excused.
  • Be punctual and present at school.
  • Use all school property appropriately and maintain its care.
  • Provide for own professional growth through advanced coursework, seminars, conferences, or reading.
  • Perform other duties or requests as directed by the administration.
