About The Position

Under the direction of the Director, Disabled Student Programs & Services, this role oversees the production of alternate media to ensure students, staff, and community members with disabilities have access to all college instruction and services. The specialist serves as the primary campus contact for media access for students with disabilities and provides technical assistance to college staff and faculty regarding legal requirements and technology for making all types of media accessible. This role also consults on issues of access to Distance Education.

Requirements

  • An Associate degree from an accredited college/university.
  • Two years of experience using technology to create alternate media formats.
  • Training in the field of assistive technologies/alternate media.

  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • Ability to demonstrate how their experience with these factors relates to successfully achieving the goals of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in a higher education setting, preferably within Disabled Student Programs & Services (DSPS) or a comparable student support program.
  • Demonstrated experience creating accessible instructional materials, including captioning, document remediation (PDF, Word, PowerPoint), multimedia accessibility, and the production of Braille materials.
  • Knowledge and applied understanding of accessibility standards and guidelines, including Section 508, WCAG 2.1, and ADA requirements.
  • Experience using and supporting assistive technologies such as screen readers (e.g., JAWS, NVDA), text-to-speech software, Braille translation software (Duxbury, Braille2000) and other adaptive tools.
  • Proficiency with software and tools used in alternate media production, such as Adobe Acrobat Pro, optical character recognition (OCR) tools, Braille embossing/translation systems, captioning platforms, and learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).
  • Experience providing training, guidance, or technical assistance to faculty and staff on accessibility compliance and inclusive instructional practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize competing deadlines, and maintain accurate production workflows and records.
  • Experience supporting distance education, including ensuring accessibility of online and hybrid course content.
  • Experience assisting and promoting the growth and success of a diverse population of students and employees through the development of interculturally competent and equity minded practices or initiatives.
  • Prior experience in approaching work and interactions with colleagues and/or students in an equity minded manner.
  • Ability to provide an inclusive and welcoming work/educational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the production of alternate media, including E-text, Large print, Braille, and Audio Recording, to enable access for individuals with disabilities.
  • Consults with the college on issues of access for students with disabilities to electronic media such as Closed/Open Captioning, Kiosks, Teleconferencing, Descriptive audio, and Phone Services.
  • Requests supplies, hardware, software, and materials; contacts vendors for competitive pricing and recommends purchases.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Requests and receives instructional materials for assignments.
  • Maintains accurate records related to media production, permissions, and priority of media produced.
  • Updates and maintains progress records of various assignments.
  • Provides students with assistance and training in the operation of various adaptive computer technologies and adaptive equipment.
  • Maintains records on the configuration and location of all access technology across campus.
  • Assists Instructional Technology services with the installation and configuration of access technology across campus.
  • Provides group in-service and one-on-one assistance to college personnel in designing and developing electronic information to meet access guidelines.
  • Provides technical assistance and consultation to the campus community, including the Book Center, Library, computer labs, career development, and management, faculty, and classified committees on access requirements for persons with disabilities.
  • Researches and stays abreast of current and emerging technologies in the alternate media field.
  • Maintains a database with accurate and complete records of all materials/orders and archives e-texts and captioned media.
  • Develops and maintains a current resource bank of access strategies for distance education.
  • Provides assistance to college personnel in designing and developing web pages and distance education materials to meet access guidelines.
  • Maintains a positive, helpful, and constructive attitude and effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, faculty, staff, students, and the community.
  • Learns and applies emerging technologies and advances as necessary to perform duties efficiently, organized, and in a timely manner.
  • Trains and provides work direction and guidance to others as directed.
  • Demonstrates sensitivity to and understanding of the disabilities and diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students.
  • Participates in District/College efforts to increase faculty and staff diversity and address student achievement gaps.

  • Attends and participates in diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings and events.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
