About The Position

90.5 WESA is seeking an All Things Considered Host to serve as a vital link in keeping the communities of western Pennsylvania informed. This role involves on-air hosting and board operation during the afternoon drive-time show, 'All Things Considered' from NPR, as well as hosting breaks during preceding programs. The Host will collaborate with the news and broadcasting departments to shape editorial content and sound. Outside of hosting duties, the Host will create additional content for air and the WESA website, subject to approval. This full-time exempt position reports to the Vice President, Broadcasting.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a journalism-related field or equivalent experience/training.
  • 2-3 years of experience as an on-air host of a news magazine.
  • 2-3 years of broadcast journalism experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional later evenings and weekends, with some long days required at times.
  • Honesty and integrity in all dealings.
  • Enthusiasm for the missions of PCBC and its stations.
  • Conversational and confident on-air style.
  • Network-quality news writing, reporting, digital recording, and production skills.
  • Ability to hit time posts, effectively forward promote content, and work with direction and coaching.
  • Strong on-air reporting, writing, and technical skills.
  • Experience operating a variety of broadcast equipment and running an audio board during an on-air shift.
  • Ability to work on deadline in a live program environment that may require invention and improvisation under stress without prior preparation, maintaining accuracy, objectivity, and composure.
  • Self-motivated team player with a track record of producing daily news stories and features of interest to local audiences.
  • Sound and ethical judgment, with a commitment to objectivity, balance, and fairness.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.

  • Knowledge of Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Host live and prerecorded breaks during the afternoon show, creating a compelling listener experience.
  • Provide updates and context to daily news through newscasts, interviews, reported stories, and digital/social posts.
  • Prepare and deliver news by gathering and rewriting material to fit time slots.
  • Collaborate with editors and reporters to cover local news.
  • Meet all regular and recurring deadlines.
  • Write and edit on-air copy, ensuring accuracy, context, fairness, and adherence to style guidelines.
  • Potentially serve as an editor, collaborating with newsroom leaders on audio and text stories.
  • Participate in an on-call editing rotation, which may include off-hours and weekends.
  • Utilize social media for breaking news, audience engagement, and source development.
  • Build trustworthy relationships with contacts and sources.
  • Make public appearances to enhance WESA's brand.
  • Participate in on-air and online fundraising as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
