Alarm Construction Apprentice
About The Position
VFS is seeking a motivated and safety-focused Fire Alarm Construction Apprentice to join our Fire Alarm Construction team. This role supports the installation, assembly, and commissioning of fire alarm and life safety systems while working under the guidance of experienced and certified technicians. The Apprentice Fire Alarm Construction Technician will receive hands-on training while developing technical skills, fire code knowledge, and safe work practices in accordance with NFPA standards and local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) requirements. This position is ideal for individuals looking to build a long-term career in fire alarm system installation and life safety systems.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- 2+ years experience in low voltage systems, electrical work, construction, or a related trade
- Ability to meet company driving eligibility requirements, including holding a valid driver's license and maintaining an acceptable motor vehicle record
- Basic mechanical or electrical aptitude
- Willingness to learn fire alarm system installation practices, construction methodologies, and applicable fire codes
- Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality and safety
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Basic computer or tablet skills for project documentation and reporting
- Ability to manage time, follow schedules, and complete assigned tasks
Nice To Haves
- Enrollment in or completion of a fire alarm, electrical, or low-voltage apprenticeship program
- Familiarity with basic hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment commonly used in low-voltage installations
- NICET Level I (Fire Alarm Systems) or willingness to obtain certification
- Interest in developing long-term technical skills within the fire alarm and life safety industry
Responsibilities
- Assist with the installation and commissioning of fire alarm and life safety systems in new construction and retrofit projects
- Support work on fire alarm components and devices, including: Fire alarm control panels, Smoke, heat, duct, and beam detectors, Manual pull stations, Horns, strobes, and speakers, Power supplies and backup batteries
- Assist senior technicians with device installation, wire pulling, cable routing, termination, and system startup activities
- Help read and interpret blueprints, drawings, wiring diagrams, and installation specifications
- Support system testing and verification activities prior to project completion
- Learn and follow NFPA 72, applicable local fire codes, project requirements, and company standards
- Maintain jobsite safety, cleanliness, and organization
- Complete project documentation, material tracking, and related records using company systems
- Communicate professionally with supervisors, project managers, contractors, customers, and inspectors
- Maintain tools, equipment, and company vehicles as assigned
- Participate in ongoing training, safety meetings, and certification or apprenticeship programs
