About The Position

Under general supervision, lead and perform tasks in repair, installation, maintenance, and testing of electrical equipment and circuits. The Senior Airport Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and inspection of critical airport electrical infrastructure that supports safe and continuous airport operations. This position performs advanced electrical work on airfield lighting systems, medium- and low-voltage distribution equipment, generators, automatic transfer switches, lighting controls, emergency power systems, and other airport facility systems while ensuring compliance with FAA Advisory Circulars, NEC, NFPA, OSHA, and local regulations. The position serves as a technical leader by diagnosing complex electrical problems, coordinating planned outages, mentoring junior electricians, reviewing work for quality and safety, and assisting with project planning and contractor oversight. The Senior Airport Electrician must be capable of working independently under emergency conditions, making sound decisions that minimize operational impacts, and coordinating with Airport Operations, the FAA, airlines, and other stakeholders during critical events. Essential competencies include advanced knowledge of electrical theory, blueprint interpretation, preventive maintenance programs, troubleshooting techniques, lockout/tagout procedures, arc flash safety, and airport operational requirements. The position requires excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, reliability, and customer service in a 24/7 operational environment.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the City and National Electric Code
  • Knowledge of safety rules and procedures when working with energized electrical equipment
  • Knowledge of building codes applicable to level of construction
  • Knowledge of equipment tools and materials used in electrical maintenance and construction
  • Knowledge of City permitting process
  • Skill in the use of hand tools common to the electrical trade
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and schematics
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other city employees, tenants and the general public
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus five (5) years experience in repair, testing, maintenance or installation of electrical systems or equipment, one (1) year of which was in the Aviation Industry and in a lead capacity.
  • Master Electrician License issued by the State of Texas
  • Ability to read, write, and fluently speak in English.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience maintaining and troubleshooting airport electrical infrastructure, including FAA airfield lighting systems, constant current regulators (CCRs), airfield signs, emergency power systems, medium-voltage distribution, and lighting control systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead electrical projects, coordinate work assignments, mentor and train electricians, and provide technical guidance while ensuring compliance with FAA, NEC, OSHA, and organizational safety standards.
  • Advanced Troubleshooting and Preventive Maintenance Skills
  • Proven experience developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs, diagnosing complex electrical failures, interpreting electrical drawings and control schematics, and utilizing computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to improve system reliability and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Pull wire, conduit, cable, etc.
  • Connect power cables to equipment, i.e. generators, alarm systems, lighting systems, etc.
  • Use various electrician hand tools, i.e. snips, screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, etc.
  • Operate soldering tools
  • Read profiles and blueprints.
  • Measure, cut, and bend wire and conduit using rulers and hand tools
  • Install wire, conduit, coaxial cable, etc.
  • Install conductors
  • Splice electrical wiring, i.e. strip insulation, twist wires together, solder, tape, apply terminal caps, etc.
  • Operate various power saws, i.e. radial arm, skill, etc.
  • Operate drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc.
  • Operate electronic testing equipment.
  • Operate cable finding equipment and equipment testers.
  • Assist other trades with electrical problems.
  • May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluations, training and guidance to others.
