About The Position

Responsible for performing daily grounds and airfield maintenance. This position requires airfield and ramp driver permitting and adherence to driving procedures. The individual will become progressively more knowledgeable in assigned tasks, procedures, techniques, and required tools to maximize efficiency. Responsibilities include pavement inspections, preventative maintenance, pavement repairs, pavement markings, gate and fence repair, erosion control, grass mowing, grading, and other grounds maintenance activities necessary for compliance with 14 CFR Part 139. This role also involves maintaining proper grades at pavement shoulders, NAVAIDs, manholes, and drop inlets, as well as maintaining storm water drainage systems. Sweeping for FOD removal, maintaining perimeter fencing and signage, and performing maintenance of painted lines and markings are also key duties. The technician will perform inspections and repairs to airport concrete and asphalt pavements, cut grass, clear brush, and apply herbicides and pesticides. Ground maintenance duties extend to various properties leased by the Airport district. Additional tasks include assisting with the removal of debris, installing and repairing signs, prep work and painting of facility items, pressure cleaning structures, washing vehicles, cleaning workspaces and water features, and assisting with snow and ice removal. The role requires setting an effective pace, minimizing interruptions, and working with limited supervision. Other duties as assigned will also be performed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in grounds maintenance, required.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as: backhoe, tractor, bush-hog, and riding mowers, required.
  • Sufficient math skills to properly calculate chemical ratios and materials needed in pavement repair.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledgeable and capable in the operation of hand and power tools used in grounds maintenance.
  • Physically able to operate various equipment, including but not limited to; backhoe, tractor, forklift, manlift, and riding mowers.
  • Able to operate vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, and those equipped with a manual transmission.
  • Ability to operate dump trucks and other commercial vehicles.
  • Ability to reverse travel by backing trailers and pull type bush hogs.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with fellow associates and supervision.
  • Must be able to complete and pass a background investigation, drug screening, and physical examination.
  • Must be physically able to use the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required of the job.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements necessary for respirator wear in the application of pesticides and/or herbicides.
  • Must be able to perform strenuous activities such as digging, using a backpack blower, jack hammer, chain saw, and other such tools necessary for airfield and grounds maintenance activities.
  • Must maintain physical fitness pertinent to work.
  • Must be able to lift objects up to 80 pounds without assistance.

  • Fill in for Airfield Grounds Lead as requested.
  • Valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with air brake endorsement, or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Commercial or Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicators License in Category 3 (Turf & Ornamental) and Category 6 (Right of Ways), or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in safety programs and training, with total commitment and compliance to all company safety and environmental policies.
  • Immediately report any unsafe conditions to supervisor.
  • Daily cleanup of all grounds, including aircraft operation area (AOA) and roads on Airport property.
  • Adhere to airfield and ramp driver permitting, driving procedures, and rules, completing annual refresher training.
  • Become progressively more knowledgeable in assigned tasks, procedures, techniques, and required tools to maximize efficiency.
  • Perform airfield grounds maintenance including pavement inspections, preventative maintenance, pavement repairs, pavement markings, gate and fence repair, erosion control, grass mowing, and grading.
  • Maintain proper grades at pavement shoulders, NAVAIDs, manholes, drop inlets, and other airfield appurtenances to comply with 14 CFR Part 139.
  • Maintain drop inlets, outfalls, riprap ditches, detention ponds, and other storm water drainage system components.
  • Sweep airfield pavement (AOA, ramp areas, parking areas, streets, and roadways) for FOD removal using various types of sweeping equipment.
  • Maintain perimeter fencing, signage, and gates.
  • Perform maintenance of painted lines and markings on runway, taxiways, aprons, parking lots, streets, and roadways.
  • Perform inspections and repairs to all airport concrete and asphalt pavements.
  • Cut grass on and around airfield, edge lights, signs, light lanes, and fence lines.
  • Clear brush on hillsides, drain ditches, and fence lines around airfield.
  • Apply herbicides and pesticides on and around airfield to control undesirable vegetation/brush and insects.
  • Perform ground maintenance duties including mowing, trim work, erosion repair, and roadway/gravel access road repairs on various Airport-leased properties.
  • Assist in removal of dead or damaged trees, tree limbs, leaves, trash, etc.
  • Install, repair, and clean all road and directional signs.
  • Perform prep work and painting of various facility items.
  • Pressure clean various concrete and metal structures.
  • Wash and clean airport vehicles.
  • Clean up pre-assigned areas and workspaces.
  • Clean Airport water features.
  • Assist with snow and ice removal activities.
  • Perform other duties necessary to keep the Airport attractive and operating safely.
  • Set an effective pace and minimize interruptions in the completion of tasks.
  • Work with limited supervision in an effective and safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
