About The Position

The Aircraft Upholstery Tech will be responsible for fabricating, installing, and/or designing upholstery, cover panels, and making simple patterns for aircraft interiors using design/engineering drawings and aircraft specifications. This role involves performing technical upholstery functions in compliance with design, customer, FAA, and aircraft specifications, as well as work order instructions. Tasks include fitting panels and windows, cabin headliners, upper sidewalls, lower side panels, hatch panels, cutting and surging carpets, covering bulkheads, fabricating metal parts, and covering/installing panels. The technician will also create carpet patterns per design drawings, complete installations, and use a material tracking system (Corridor) for parts demand, squawk tracking, and work sign-offs. Higher levels may involve sewing covers, working with various materials (fabric, vinyl, leather, composites), implementing process improvements using Lean Manufacturing and Lean Six-Sigma tools, accepting lead responsibilities, conducting safety audits, mentoring junior technicians, and advanced knowledge of upholstery and carpet installation.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering documentation.
  • Ability to use measuring tools and perform basic math computations.
  • Must be computer literate.
  • Able to climb ladders and stairs, work in small, restricted areas, lift up to 40 pounds and work any shift.
  • Possess a working knowledge of company inspection and process specifications and terminology.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using commercial sewing machines, sergers and/or various hand tools used in upholstery and carpet trades is preferred.
  • Experience ranges from entry level to Unique Skills.
  • Valid driver's license may be required.
  • Participation in a DOT/FAA drug and alcohol program may be required.
  • Advanced knowledge of upholstery and sewing processes and products and/or advance carpet knowledge including being able to install custom carpets.

Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, install, and/or design upholstery, cover panels, and make simple patterns for aircraft interiors using design/engineering drawings and aircraft specifications.
  • Perform technical upholstery functions within design, customer, FAA, and aircraft specifications.
  • Complete specific installation and trim tasks in compliance with work order instructions and specifications.
  • Fit panels and windows, cabin headliners, upper sidewalls, lower side panels, hatch panels, and windows.
  • Cut and surge carpets.
  • Cover bulkheads.
  • Fabricate various metal parts.
  • Cover and install panels.
  • Create carpet patterns per design drawings and complete installation.
  • Use the material tracking system (Corridor) to create parts demand, track squawks, and sign-off work.
  • Sew simple covers using design/engineering drawings and aircraft specifications.
  • Work with fabric, vinyl, leather hides, composites, and other materials using specified adhesives, sewing equipment, hardware, hand tools, and various power tools.
  • Develop and implement process improvements that increase safety, reduce cost, cycle time, and man-hours using Lean Manufacturing and other process improvement techniques.
  • Comply with safety, 5S, and housekeeping policies and use personal protective equipment as required.
  • Address unsafe conditions before putting others at risk.
  • Fabricate and install seat covers, curtains, and various assemblies and subassemblies.
  • Interpret material specifications and design/engineering drawings to ensure finished product meets design and engineering requirements.
  • Sew, fabricate, and install covers for all styles of panels in the aircraft interior while meeting safety, quality, and productivity standards and goals.
  • Work with design/drawings to cut and install advanced custom design carpets with unique patterns.
  • Accept lead responsibilities when needed.
  • Oversee projects and coordinate with lead to delegate tasks to assigned technicians.
  • Conduct safety audits and assist team members in doing safety audits.
  • Assist in maintaining shop equipment and associated JSAs.
  • Champion Safety, 5S, and housekeeping policies and ensure the protection of aircraft interiors (PTP).
  • Mentor and train lesser skilled technicians and monitor their work to ensure they complete assigned tasks in accordance with required levels of safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Develop and implement process improvements to reduce material cost, cycle time, and labor hours using Lean Six-Sigma tools.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
