About The Position

The Aircraft Structural Mechanic III APG (T-38) is responsible for assessing aircraft damage and drafting repair procedures for aircraft structural and composite components. This role requires advanced metalworking practices and depot-level techniques to form, cut, bend, and fasten new or repair components to damaged structures. Proficiency in close tolerance drilling/reaming for high-strength fastener installation and expert use of powered/non-powered metalworking tooling and equipment are essential. The position involves inspecting and assessing damage, removing and installing fasteners, designing structural repairs, performing flight control weight and balance functions, and inspecting components for serviceability. The mechanic will also fabricate jigs, fixtures, and molds, use advanced metalworking practices, and train others in metal layout techniques, corrosion control, and protective coatings. Responsibilities include recommending improvements, using automated maintenance systems for data input and analysis, documenting maintenance, handling hazardous waste, operating support equipment, performing FOD walks, maintaining tool control, and complying with safety regulations. The role also requires maintaining equipment records and performing other related duties as needed.

Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
12 years relevant aircraft structural maintenance experience with fixed / rotary wing commercial, Government or DOD aircraft, 10 years of which directly working on T-38 and 5+ years of depot level structural maintenance experience.
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a Government Security Clearance.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as engineering drawings, technical documentation, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Strong decision analysis and problem-solving skills.
Ability to draw conclusions and justify decisions.
Must be able to communicate issues to management.
Highly knowledgeable of fixed wing aircraft construction features, identification and characteristics of aerospace materials to include proper use, mixing, and storage of acids, solvents, alcohol, caustics, primers, and paints, and proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste and materials.
Extensive knowledge in fabrication and depot repair / replacement of metal components, tubing, cable, plastic, fiberglass, bonded honeycomb, and composite structural components.
Intermediate computer skills specifically using Microsoft Office Suite.
Ability to learn additional computer skills or software programs.
Must be able to utilize respirator, forced air, or other breathing equipment during the performance of assigned duties.
Ability to enter data accurately into databases.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Interpersonal skills are necessary to work effectively and cooperatively with all levels of management and staff.
Will also routinely interact with other crew members.
Must possess effective oral and technical written communication skills to clearly communicate information to others.
Ability to use general office equipment such as fax, phone, copier, scanner, printers, etc.
Ability to follow processes.
Strong professional customer service skills, including active listening, prompt service and follow-up.

Nice To Haves

Previous Air Force Specialty Code 2A773 highly desirable.
Multi aspect aviation qualifications / certifications / disciplines and ability to train these skills a must.
Experience supporting DoD contracts.
Strong knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within depot level maintenance.
Working knowledge of advanced software applications is preferred.
Rigging Certification and/or Engine Run Certified a plus!
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and/or Powerplant certification a plus.

Responsibilities

Inspect / assess damage to aircraft structural components and formulate proper repair/replacement procedures utilizing applicable technical data.
Remove and install close tolerance, high-strength fasteners in major aircraft structural components.
Design structural repair, modification, and corrosion protection treatments with respect to original strength, weight, and contour to maintain structural integrity.
Perform post repair flight control weight and balance functions as well as control surface rigging per designated technical orders.
Inspect components/repairs for structural serviceability according to specifications and technical publications.
Manufacture / use jigs, fixtures, forms, and molds to fabricate repair or replacement parts.
Use advanced metalworking practices, equipment, and tools to form, cut, bend, and fasten replacement or repair parts to damaged structures and components.
Train shop drawing and depot level metal layout techniques; shop mathematics; corrosion identification, removal, repair, and prevention; cleaning of metals; application of protective coatings, and markings.
Recommend methods to improve equipment performance and maintenance procedures.
Use automated maintenance systems.
Input, validate, and analyze data processed to automated systems.
Inspect, clear, and close out completed maintenance discrepancies in automated maintenance systems.
Document maintenance as per Quality Assurance (QA) and established regulatory requirements.
Store, handle, and dispose of hazardous waste and materials according to environmental standards and company processes.
Operate and maintain related aircraft Support Equipment (SE).
Use automated maintenance systems to monitor maintenance trends, analyze equipment requirements, maintain equipment records, document maintenance actions, and time change database.
Perform regular Foreign Object Damage (FOD) walks.
Maintain strict tool control procedures.
Report missing, lost, found, or unattended tools to the supervisor.
Inventory and inspect tools on a regular basis and replace worn or broken tools.
Comply with safety rules and regulations while performing day to day maintenance.
Promptly report all accidents, injuries, safety violations, and/or unsafe practices or procedures to supervisor.
Maintain equipment records.
Enter in the maintenance records description of the work performed and verify the work was performed satisfactorily.
Perform other related duties to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
