About The Position

This is a Title 32 dual status position located at the Theater Aviation Sustainment Maintenance Group (TASMG) in Groton, CT. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, modify, and test aircraft engines within the Aviation Classification and Repair Activity Depot (AVCRAD). The AVCRAD is an industrial facility that provides sustainment base maintenance for regional Army National Guard (ARNG) Aviation assets and supports field maintenance according to ARNG Aviation priorities. The AVCRAD ensures aircraft readiness for Federal and State missions, and performs National Maintenance Program (NMP) repair of rotary wing aircraft and components, limited depot airframe repair, aircraft painting, major airframe repair, depot-level component repair, and component repair and management as directed by Army Materiel Command (AMC) and prioritized by the National Guard Bureau (NGB). This position performs maintenance, removal, installation, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of aircraft engines. National Guard membership is required, and this is an excepted position requiring membership in a compatible military assignment in the Connecticut Army National Guard. The position may be extended or terminated at the discretion of the TASMG Commander.

Requirements

  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.
  • Must meet Compatible Military Assignment within one year from placement.
  • Wear of the military uniform is mandatory.
  • Direct Deposit is mandatory.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
  • Must possess a valid state drivers license.
  • General Experience: Experience that has provided the ability to perform assembly and disassembly operations and make prescribed modifications to aircraft engines, engine assemblies, and accessories in accordance with technical specifications, procedures and requirements.
  • General Experience: Experience using hand and power tools common to the trade.
  • Specialized Experience (WG-05): 6 months experience using common hand tools in making repetitive mechanical repairs under close supervision. Experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the simpler and routine duties of the trade.
  • Specialized Experience (WG-08): 12 months experience or training removing and installing components and accessories with detailed guidance. Experience in following detailed instructions in making minor repairs and modifications to aircraft engines, subassemblies and components.
  • Specialized Experience (WG-10): 18 months experience performing standard, routine assembly and disassembly operations and making prescribed modifications to aircraft engines, engine assemblies, and accessories.
  • Specialized Experience (WG-10): Experience performing maintenance overhaul, troubleshooting, testing, and repair of aircraft engines, engine components, and power trains for fixed and/or rotary wing aircraft.
  • Specialized Experience (WG-10): Experience determining maintenance needed from work orders, inspection reports, historical record, and by own diagnosis.
  • Knowledge in installing, removing, operating, and repairing a variety of conventional and modified aircraft engines and accessory systems in order to troubleshoot, maintain, repair, and/or test different types of engines in aircraft test cells, maintenance shops, and on the flight line.
  • Knowledge of repair methods, degrees of disassembly necessary, and the extent of rework required before reassembly.
  • Knowledge of principles of electrical, electronics, heating, refrigeration, pneumatics, hydraulics, internal combustion engines and small gas turbines as applies to powered ground support equipment and use of applicable technical publications, blueprints, diagrams, material, and maintenance control procedures.
  • Must be assigned to a compatible military position within 1 year of selection.
  • The selected individual may be required to attend formal technician school training.
  • Enlisted: E-1 through E-6 (Military Grade prior to appointment).
  • Individual selected must undergo a pre-employment physical examination prior to appointment.
  • Training at the National Guard Professional Education Center (NGPEC) is a mandatory condition of employment, subject to availability of resources. NGB prescribed courses at NGPEC must be completed within 6 months of assignment to this position. Failure to complete course(s) may result in reassignment or termination of full-time employment unless extenuating circumstances preclude course attendance.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses malfunctioning engines utilizing all available test equipment to determine degree of disassembly, repair, modification, and adjustment needed.
  • Performs periodic and special inspections on engines.
  • Performs engine trim in accordance with applicable directives.
  • Evaluates justification documentation for unsatisfactory item reports and practicality of proposed modification requests.
  • Removes and disassembles aircraft engines in order to perform necessary maintenance.
