About The Position

Responsible for the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic control duties in a Visual Flight Rules (VFR) Airport Traffic Control Tower. Works under the general supervision of the tower manager who relies on the incumbent to perform established duties independently. On new or revised procedures, the manager gives detailed instructions and observes and checks work, during or immediately after completion, according to the complexity of the task until satisfied the incumbent can perform it independently.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience as an Air Traffic Controller.
  • Current or previous Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO) Certificate.
  • Current Class II Medical Certificate.
  • Held a Control Tower Operator Certificate (CTO) with a facility rating for a minimum of two years in an Air Traffic Control Tower.
  • Subject to drug and/or alcohol testing per DOT/FAA requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Making decisions involving the order of departures to ensure equitable treatment and proper operation of Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flights.
  • Determining the times and direction of takeoff and any turn necessary after departure.
  • Deciding whether inbound aircraft should land immediately or circle, and adjusting distances to control arrival.
  • Selecting the active runway and managing the possible simultaneous use of other runways.
  • Interspersing arrivals and departures to minimize traffic delays.
  • Clearing aircraft for runway use to ensure standard separation.
  • Sequencing arriving traffic before it enters the traffic pattern for a safe and orderly flow.
  • Applying Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) separation standards as delegated by approach control or the center.
  • Sequencing Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) traffic, and using radar for initial separation when delegated.
  • Authorizing Visual Flight Rules (VFR) flights through Class D airspace.
  • Determining the usability of communication frequencies and navigational aids.
  • Monitoring navigational aids and control panels, including tower radar display.
  • Instructing pilots to change radio frequencies/transponder codes.
  • Coordinating with other controllers on aircraft movements.
  • Preplanning traffic sequencing and separation over a radius of 5 miles or more.
  • Preplanning and setting up checkpoints for traffic separation.
  • Maintaining a continuous mental picture and evaluation of changing traffic.
  • Maintaining continuous radio watch with aircraft.
  • Studying weather reports and forecasts, observing weather, and recording pilot reports to determine the effect of weather on traffic.
  • Furnishing aircraft with information such as field conditions, altimeter settings, weather conditions, and navigational aid status.
  • Forwarding pilot weather reports and personal weather observations to relevant authorities.
  • Operating light guns, runway lights, field lighting, and jet barriers.
  • Orienting lost or distressed pilots.
  • Determining potential emergency situations and notifying relevant offices and services.
  • Performing lower grade level duties as necessary.
  • Providing On-the-job (OJT) training to others.
