About The Position

Assist the teacher with instructional needs as appropriate. Support the instructional program and provide instructional accommodations for students, including students with disabilities. Help carry out teacher-planned activities and drills, maintain instructional materials and equipment, and assist with student progress records while preserving confidentiality. Duties may include self-care and personal care, therapy-program support, behavior intervention strategies, and non-medical procedures such as feeding tubes, as needed and identified in applicable student IEPs. Other duties, including SHARS duties, may be assigned. The position is subject to federal, state, and local policies and procedures related to special education paraprofessionals and child care facilities. The role is a 187-duty-day, non-exempt position and may involve travel among district work locations, occasional prolonged or irregular hours, and physical assistance with students.

Requirements

• For a Title I campus: at least 48 college hours or a score of 464 on the ParaPro test.
• For a non-Title I campus: 15 college hours, or a high school diploma or GED with a passing ParaPro score of 464.
• Ability to work with children with disabilities.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to communicate effectively.
• Knowledge of general office equipment.
• Paraprofessional Educational Aide Certificate II required once employed.
• CPI certification required once employed.
• Ability to maintain emotional control under stress.
• Ability to meet the position's physical demands, which may include lifting and transferring students, including heavy lifting greater than 50 pounds, positioning students with physical disabilities, physical restraint, and assisting non-ambulatory students.

Responsibilities

• Adhere to federal, state, and local policies and procedures related to special education paraprofessionals and child care facilities.
• Participate in planned in-services and professional growth activities.
• Assist in carrying out the instructional program.
• Assist in maintaining confidential student records and data used to determine student progress.
• Assist in preparing, using, and maintaining instructional materials and equipment.
• Assist with teacher-planned activities, exercises, and drills.
• Assist students with self-care activities such as feeding and toileting when needed.
• Assist in implementing therapy programs, which may require lifting and positioning students.
• Attend professional meetings as required.
• Assist in implementing behavior intervention strategies.
• Assist in providing non-medical procedures, such as feeding tubes and other interventions, as necessary for students.
• Provide instructional support and implement instructional accommodations for students.
• Provide personal care as identified in applicable student IEPs.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including other SHARS duties.
