AI Systems Developer

EmtechCentralia, WA

About The Position

Emtech is building an AI business operating system designed to enable the company to scale efficiently without a proportional increase in administrative overhead. The AI Systems Developer will be responsible for the technical foundation of this system, including designing and implementing autonomous background agents to automate repetitive tasks and developing internal web applications to enhance Emtech's existing tools and provide employees with better information and processes. This is a senior, build-focused role requiring the translation of solution concepts into reliable, secure, production-grade systems, with ongoing maintenance and improvement. The role involves setting technical direction in collaboration with the IT Manager, working with a strategic advisory partner, and sharing responsibility for infrastructure and data security with the IT department. Success is defined by a balance of rapid, AI-assisted iteration and the discipline to maintain built systems. This position supports the entire organization and operates primarily from the main business location.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience, including building and operating production systems and integrations.
  • Hands-on experience building with large language models and agent frameworks (tool use, orchestration, retrieval, and memory).
  • Strong working knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred) and data modeling; familiarity with knowledge-graph, vector, or other memory layers is a plus.
  • Practical DevOps skills: deployment, environments, monitoring, and reliability for the systems you build.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate and automate across SaaS platforms and APIs (e.g., Microsoft 365, Slack, QuickBooks, BambooHR, or comparable systems).
  • Fluency with AI-assisted development - using AI coding tools to build and iterate rapidly - paired with the engineering judgment to read, review, debug, and stand behind the resulting code.
  • A demonstrated commitment to maintaining and improving systems over time, not just building new ones.
  • Security-minded approach to handling sensitive business data.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and set technical direction in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
  • Applicants must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without current or future visa sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with knowledge-graph, vector, or other memory layers is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Promotes and upholds the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of Emtech, LLC in day-to-day activities.
  • Build and own the technical foundation of Emtech's AI operating system - a single, integrated data and knowledge layer - and the connections that feed it from across the business.
  • Design, build, and deploy autonomous background agents and automations that replace repetitive, manual work across departments.
  • Build and maintain internal web applications that extend Emtech's core software and deliver better information and workflows to employees.
  • Translate solution concepts and demos into secure, reliable, production-grade systems, and own them through launch and ongoing operation.
  • Take functional and demo applications built by others to production quality - integrated into the central platform and adopted by their owning teams.
  • Establish baselines and measure the time saved by each automation so impact is verifiable.
  • Maintain, update, and improve existing builds as needs change, preventing degradation over time.
  • Select and apply the right AI models and tools for each task, managing for both quality and cost.
  • Codify business context, knowledge, and processes into agent-readable context - SOPs, decision rules, terminology, and compliance constraints that agents need to act reliably.
  • Evaluate emerging AI tools, models, and patterns; separate signal from noise and recommend what to adopt now versus what to wait on.
  • Treat security and responsible data handling as assumed requirements; partner with IT on access control, least privilege, and data governance for sensitive systems such as email, finance, payroll, and meeting records.
  • Document architecture, configurations, and processes so systems are supportable and transferable.
  • Communicate changes and support adoption with non-technical staff so automated processes are trusted and used.
  • Partner with the IT Manager on cross-functional initiatives - contributing to planning, configuration, testing, and change management.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and recommend scalable, best-practice solutions.
  • Occasional after-hours work may be required for urgent issues or production go-lives.
