The Materials & Manufacturing Systems Research Lab at the General Motors R&D Center is seeking a technically exceptional AI/ML Senior Researcher with expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Large Language Models (LLMs), World Models, and Agentic AI for research in Smart Manufacturing Systems. This role involves providing technical and professional leadership to identify, define, and develop future strategic applications of AI in GM’s factory operations. Researchers will counsel engineering management on process improvements, lead GM programs/projects, and represent GM in research activities with external collaborators. The group focuses on developing advanced AI/ML, Agentic AI, mathematical modeling, and optimization approaches to build real-time decision support tools for manufacturing efficiency and quality. The role requires hands-on work to architect, build, deploy, and scale AI/ML models and agentic systems to address complex manufacturing challenges. The ideal candidate is comfortable developing production-grade AI/ML solutions, evaluating emerging technologies, and discussing strategy, roadmap, and business impact with senior leaders. A background in manufacturing systems, smart manufacturing, digital twins, simulation, statistics, quality management, control systems, and machine vision is desirable, with experience in production operations being a plus.
