About The Position

State Farm is seeking an AI Engineering Manager to lead a team of 3-5 embedded agentic engineers. These engineers work within Product Oriented Delivery pods to help ship products faster and with higher quality through agentic workflows. The manager will be responsible for building the agentic harness tuned to existing infrastructure, writing code, running the developer community, and driving innovation projects to production on Databricks. The role emphasizes a player-coach model, where leaders build alongside their team, and a focus on measurable outcomes (2x quality, 2x speed). Requirements

  • 2+ years managing engineering teams.
  • Experience with embedded/distributed teams.

  • Shipped end-to-end systems to production with real users, SLAs, and on-call responsibilities (not PoCs).
  • 1+ year operating production ML/AI systems.
  • 2+ years production Databricks (Delta Lake, Unity Catalog, MLflow, PySpark).

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 3-5 embedded agentic engineers.
  • Build the agentic harness tuned to our infrastructure, including hooks, connectors, and integrations with Claude for code quality checks, artifact generation, and next-best-action guidance.
  • Develop production templates for Databricks solutions such as Medallion pipelines, Unity Catalog governance, MLflow, and PySpark, ensuring real systems with monitoring and runbooks.
  • Foster the developer community through demos, office hours, and pattern libraries, measuring adoption and impact.
  • Ensure production readiness through quality gates, automated checks, incident coaching, and effective handoffs.
  • Hire, manage, and grow the engineering team, including conducting 1:1s and supporting career development.
  • Write code alongside the team, contributing 30-40% of the time.
  • Ensure a steady stream of innovation projects make it to production.
