AI Engineer - Data Science

Applied Underwriters•New York, NY

About The Position

United Risk is a global property and casualty insurance underwriting and distribution platform, independently owned and operated by its practice partners and affiliated with Applied Underwriters. Its practices span specialty casualty and property, surety, financial lines, aviation, crisis and political risk, marine, fine art, and other areas. The AI team builds tools for underwriters, including submission ingestion, underwriting workbenches, risk analysis, and back- and middle-office automation. It delivers tailored solutions to improve efficiency while maintaining security and compliance standards. As one of a small group of AI Engineers, you will work directly with underwriters and operations staff to adapt existing products to their needs and build new tools where existing solutions do not fit. The role has a data science focus: turning submission, policy, and loss data into actionable insights for underwriters. Team members also build applications and work on infrastructure. Three senior AI Engineers review your work and provide guidance. Applicants should apply with a résumé and a link to a GitHub profile, deployed application, or portfolio. Portfolios are reviewed first. Shortlisted candidates will walk a senior engineer through a project they built and explain their choices. The company may use AI tools to support parts of the hiring process, but final hiring decisions are made by humans.
