About The Position

United Risk is hiring an AI Engineer on a small AI team that builds tools to help insurance underwriters work more efficiently and make better-informed decisions. The team develops submission ingestion, underwriting workbenches, risk analysis, and automation for back- and middle-office operations, with attention to security and compliance.

This role focuses on data science, using submission, policy, and loss data to develop insights underwriters can act on. The engineer will work directly with underwriters and operations staff, adapt existing products to their needs, and build new solutions when existing tools are not suitable. Team members also build applications and work on infrastructure. Three senior AI engineers review work and provide guidance and teaching.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, engineering, or a related field.
• 0–4 years of experience, including internships and co-ops.
• Strong Python and SQL skills, with comfort working with messy real-world data.
• A grounding in statistics.
• Demonstrable work built by the applicant, such as a structured-extraction or document-processing project, a RAG or document Q&A system, an evaluation or testing setup for model or LLM output, or a data analysis or modeling project using a real dataset.
• Curiosity about how the business operates and patience to learn insurance from knowledgeable colleagues.
• Clear communication with non-technical colleagues.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with underwriters and operations staff to understand their needs.
• Adapt existing products to business needs and build new solutions where existing products do not fit.
• Use submission, policy, and loss data to generate actionable insights for underwriters.
• Build applications and contribute to infrastructure.
• Present a project built by the applicant and explain the choices made, if shortlisted.
