AI Data Migration Engineer

GovPilot
•$120,000 - $140,000•Remote

About The Position

The AI Data Migration Engineer owns customer data migrations into GovPilot, taking legacy data from intake through mapping, transformation, loading, validation, and sign-off. The role works with database backups and SQL Server, Access, and Oracle exports, as well as CSV and Excel files. AI is central to the work: the engineer directs AI agents to profile source databases, propose mappings, generate scripts, and automate validation, then reviews and verifies the output and makes it reusable. The role requires enough technical expertise to identify and correct errors in AI-generated SQL and scripts. The engineer develops reusable AI-assisted import pipelines, prompts, agent workflows, and scripts; replaces manual spot-checks with automated reconciliation; identifies data-quality issues early; and keeps mapping logic, scripts, and logs auditable. The position calls for independent ownership of multiple migrations and active improvement of the migration process. Production cutovers may take place in evenings or on weekends, and the engineer is expected to plan for and support them. The role is remote, with required overlap with US Eastern business hours.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of hands-on experience with relational databases and data imports, such as ETL, bulk loads, data conversions, or migrations.
  • Strong SQL skills, including writing, debugging, and optimizing queries and identifying errors in AI-generated SQL.
  • Ability to read and modify AI-generated scripts in Python, PowerShell, or a similar language.
  • Daily, hands-on use of AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, or Copilot agents to build data workflows, with an example of work built this way and an ability to describe what the AI got wrong.
  • A track record of automating previously manual work, such as a process, report, or import.
  • Self-direction and experience owning projects with little supervision and delivering without being chased.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends when cutovers or go-lives require it.
  • Care when handling sensitive government and resident data (PII), using approved tools only.
  • Ability to manage multiple client migrations and raise blockers early.

Nice To Haves

  • SQL Server experience.
  • Experience with ETL or data pipeline tools.
  • Familiarity with local government or municipal software.

Responsibilities

  • Own migrations end-to-end, from raw client data intake through mapping, transformation, loading, and sign-off.
  • Use AI agents to profile source databases, propose source-to-target mappings, and generate data-cleansing, deduplication, and load scripts; review, test, and take ownership of the output.
  • Turn migrations into reusable AI-assisted import pipelines, prompt and agent workflows, and scripts.
  • Automate validation and reconciliation, including row counts, checksums, and field-level diffs, to prove data accuracy and prevent data loss.
  • Identify and automate manual steps in the migration process, share effective approaches with the team, and help shape migration practices.
  • Find data-quality issues early and clearly explain them to the people who need to act.
  • Maintain clear, auditable mapping logic, scripts, and logs so teammates can trace record transformations.
  • Plan for and support production cutovers and go-lives, including scheduled evenings and weekends.
  • Manage several client migrations at once and raise blockers early.

Benefits

  • Unlimited PTO, which the company expects employees to use, especially after a go-live weekend.
  • Flexible hours and remote work.
  • Comprehensive health insurance.
  • Dental insurance.
  • Vision insurance.
  • 401(k) with a 4% employer match for eligible team members.
  • Learning and professional development budget.
  • Home office and IT budget.
  • Access to the latest AI tools, plus time and support to use them well.
  • May be considered for a discretionary bonus.
