AI Automation Engineer Intern

FirstDay FoundationSan Antonio, TX

About The Position

This internship is designed for a graduate student in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field who seeks hands-on experience applying AI/ML development, process automation, and cloud infrastructure skills to organizational projects. The Automation Engineer Intern will support the design, development, and deployment of AI-driven automation solutions across enterprise platforms. Over the course of the 10-week internship the intern will work closely with the CIS (Clinical/Corporate Information Systems), BI, Data, and Cybersecurity teams, gaining hands-on experience building intelligent workflows, data pipelines, and AI-powered tools that reduce manual effort and improve operational efficiency. This role offers meaningful exposure to modern AI/ML frameworks, enterprise integration architecture, and data governance practices in a real-world environment. Project assignments will reflect both organizational priorities and the intern's interests and strengths.

Requirements

  • Graduate student currently enrolled in an accredited college or university
  • Must be pursuing a Master's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field (e.g., Computer Engineering, Machine Learning, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Information Security, or Computational Science)
  • Self-motivated and dependable; able to take initiative after receiving guidance and work independently
  • Detail-oriented and organized; able to track multiple tasks over time
  • Intellectual curiosity and interest in applying AI and automation to nonprofit, social impact, or enterprise operational contexts
  • Proficiency in Python and/or JavaScript; familiarity with SQL
  • Exposure to AI/ML concepts, including large language models (LLMs), natural language processing (NLP), and document intelligence (OCR, classification)
  • Familiarity with API integration (REST, webhooks) and middleware concepts
  • Experience with version control systems (Git/Bitbucket) and basic CI/CD processes
  • Working knowledge of data pipeline tools and ETL processes
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear technical documentation
  • Ability to work collaboratively across cross-functional teams
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving mindset
  • Proof of work eligibility and must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship
  • Ability to handle sensitive data (PHI/PII) with discretion and in compliance with organizational data governance policies
  • Ability to complete and pass background check and pre-employment drug screen

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with one or more enterprise platforms (Salesforce, Workday, SharePoint, or EHR systems) is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Design and build AI-driven automation workflows that reduce manual effort across CIS-supported systems (Salesforce, Workday, SharePoint, EHR)
  • Develop and deploy automation scripts for data extraction, transformation, and integration between platforms
  • Assist in building AI-powered document processing pipelines (OCR, classification, data extraction) for operational and compliance use cases
  • Prototype and implement LLM-driven solutions (e.g., summarization, classification, chatbot interfaces) using modern frameworks and APIs
  • Support integration of AI capabilities into existing SaaS platforms via APIs and middleware
  • Create and maintain data pipelines for AI/ML use cases, including ingestion, cleansing, and structuring of enterprise data
  • Collaborate with BI and Data teams to enhance analytics through AI augmentation (predictive insights, anomaly detection)
  • Develop automation use cases for legacy data migration, including extraction from prior systems (e.g., Therap → EHR)
  • Assist in designing secure AI patterns that align with data governance and cybersecurity policies (PHI/PII handling)
  • Build lightweight internal tools or dashboards to operationalize AI outputs for business users
  • Deliver a minimum of two (2) fully documented automation workflows deployed to a staging or production environment by the end of the internship
  • Complete at least one (1) AI-powered document processing pipeline (OCR, classification, or data extraction) ready for operational or compliance use
  • Produce a working prototype of an LLM-driven solution (e.g., summarization tool, classification model, or chatbot interface) with documented API integration
  • Build and deliver at least one (1) internal tool or dashboard that operationalizes AI outputs for business users
  • Create comprehensive technical and functional documentation for all solutions developed, formatted for reuse and scalability
  • Complete at least one (1) legacy data migration use case, with extraction logic and transformation scripts validated against source data
  • Deliver a written evaluation and recommendation report on AI tools, frameworks, or services assessed during the internship, with alignment to enterprise architecture standards
  • Participate in a minimum of four (4) code reviews and contribute to testing and deployment processes via Git/Bitbucket and CI/CD pipelines where applicable
