AI Applications Engineer (Glen Cove, NY)

Standard BotsGlen Cove, NY
$120,000 - $150,000Onsite

About The Position

The AI Applications Engineer sits at the intersection of robotics, AI, and hands-on field work. This role is a mechanical + electrical + software trifecta that uses AI as a tool, with the factory floor as the primary office. The engineer will work closely with sales, software, and applications engineering teams to scope AI-enabled solutions, build proofs of concept, and travel to customer sites for installation and commissioning. This is a builder's role for individuals who enjoy tinkering and are not suited for desk-bound work. The role requires up to 50% domestic travel, which is expected to decrease as the team grows.

Requirements

  • Robot programming proficiency or adjacent software experience (e.g., Python).
  • Prior robotics knowledge (e.g., high school robotics, professional manipulation experience).
  • Surface-level fluency in ML models and techniques (e.g., convolutional neural networks, object detection, visual language models).
  • Technical proficiency in an engineering environment, including documentation, project management, and teamwork.
  • Willingness to travel up to 50% domestically.
  • Mechanical Design specialization (pneumatics, camera mounts, end-of-arm tooling for manipulators; gripper design is a plus).
  • Electrical Design specialization (custom board fabrication, wiring relays and solenoids in automation environments).
  • Machine Vision specialization (knowledge of cameras and lenses for specific applications, experience deploying vision systems).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with collaborative robots (UR, Fanuc, KUKA, ABB, or similar).
  • Hands-on work with vision systems in a production or lab environment (Cognex, Basler, FLIR, or similar).
  • Familiarity with ROS or other robotics middleware.
  • Background in a manufacturing or industrial automation environment.
  • Experience at a startup.

Responsibilities

  • Work with customers and the sales team to identify where AI (computer vision, object detection, visual language models) can create leverage in their production process.
  • Design and build proofs of concept to validate solutions before customer commitment.
  • Develop documentation, sample code, and integration guides for customers and internal teams.
  • Travel to customer sites to install, configure, and commission AI-enabled robotic cells.
  • Own the full integration process, including camera placement and calibration, model deployment, I/O configuration, and testing.
  • Troubleshoot on-site issues until resolution.
  • Train customer operators and engineers on the AI capabilities of their Standard Bots deployment.
  • Serve as a technical resource for customers post-installation.
  • Provide feedback from real-world deployments to engineering and product teams.
  • Collaborate with applications and engineering teams on new feature testing, peripheral integrations, and platform expansion.
  • Contribute to the internal knowledge base on AI-enabled applications.
