About The Position

The Montana Department of Agriculture is seeking an Agricultural Technician in Great Falls to sample grain and other crops. The State Grain Laboratory in Great Falls operates a statewide grain and commodity inspection program, performing accurate and unbiased sampling, inspections, and testing in compliance with federal and state grain standards. As the only federally designated, official grain inspection service in Montana, the lab certifies the type and grade of crops for market value determination under federal standards. Grain Samplers may begin their day preparing samples at the Lab before being assigned a route for collecting samples from various grain elevators. This often involves significant driving, with elevators located hours away from Great Falls. At each elevator, crop samples are taken from rail cars, trucks, totes, or bags and returned to the lab. The routes and crops vary daily. The State Grain Laboratory provides on-the-job training during paid work hours.

Requirements

  • Good driving record.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb. crop samples and boxes.
  • Ability to climb ladders to the top of rail cars, hopper cars and trucks.
  • Ability to carry a 12 ft. probe to the top and insert into 12 feet of compacted grain to obtain samples.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare samples for grading inspections at the Lab.
  • Collect crop samples from rail cars, trucks, totes, or bags at grain elevators.
  • Drive assigned routes to various grain elevators, which may be located hours away from Great Falls.
  • Return collected samples to the Lab after completing the assigned route.
  • Process samples in the laboratory using lab equipment.
  • Perform sampling outdoors on railcars and trucks, and indoors for totes and bags.
  • Climb ladders to access the top of rail cars, hopper cars, and trucks.
  • Carry a 12 ft. probe to the top of rail cars/trucks and insert it into up to 12 feet of compacted grain to obtain samples.
