Agile Product Owner - Auto

Travelers•Hartford, CT
•$101,600 - $167,600

About The Position

Travelers is seeking an Agile Product Owner to lead a smaller-scale team in delivering capabilities and solutions using Agile practices. The Product Owner acts as the voice of the end user and guides the team’s day-to-day work toward defined outcomes, focusing on what must be achieved rather than prescribing how the work is completed. The role defines and prioritizes a ready backlog, accepts final product output, and manages deliverables, capabilities, and experimentation. It uses iterative feedback to refine product direction, measures performance, and adjusts the roadmap as needed. The Product Owner aligns team goals with circle and value-stream vision, communicates strategy to stakeholders and team members, and partners with Circle Leads and peers on resources needed to achieve business outcomes. The position also promotes business readiness and adoption, removes impediments, supports continuous improvement, shares practices across teams, and fosters an innovative, inclusive, collaborative environment.

Requirements

  • Two years of work experience in a related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Embody Agile core values of openness, courage, respect, focus, and commitment.
  • Apply Agile principles, practices, and methodologies to achieve team success.
  • Define a product value proposition aligned with and supportive of circle and value-stream objectives.
  • Influence leaders and others without relying on traditional hierarchy.
  • Foster an environment where individuals thrive as empowered and equal team members.
  • Communicate thoughts, concepts, and practices effectively at all levels, adapting to the audience.
  • Work effectively with others in a cross-functional, multi-team environment.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous improvement, sharing learning, and encouraging team development.

Responsibilities

  • Write epics that define business outcomes rather than system changes, focusing on platform flexibility rather than specific encoded rules.
  • Design for configurability by avoiding early commitments to specific rates, states, or market rules.
  • Apply vertical slicing to deliver the thinnest end-to-end path through a user journey first, then expand scope incrementally.
  • Maintain traceability by ensuring each story aligns to a portfolio epic and a measurable success indicator.
  • Use sound judgment to distinguish what Auto systems build from what they integrate with, keeping scope accurate and transparent.
  • Translate technical concepts, including data contract standards and entitlement models, into plain language for nontechnical business partners.
  • Refine early epics iteratively with engineering and product partners based on feedback.
  • Define, prioritize, and maintain a ready backlog for a smaller-scale product team, and accept final product output.
  • Manage a backlog of deliverables, capabilities, and test-and-learn experimentation; measure performance and adjust the roadmap as needed.
  • Understand and implement team goals and strategy in alignment with circle and value-stream vision, and articulate them to stakeholders, Circle Leads, and team members.
  • Represent end users, understand and respond to customer feedback, define needs and requirements, and ensure work meets acceptance criteria.
  • Own, prioritize, and refine the team backlog; make trade-off decisions to maximize value.
  • Optimize value flow by setting objectives and key performance indicators for solutions.
  • Participate in business readiness, assess change impacts, and implement approaches to manage adoption and mitigate resistance.
  • Provide feedback on work in progress, clarify requirements, help remove roadblocks, and identify opportunities for continuous team and process improvement.
  • Partner with Circle Leads and peers to communicate the resources required to achieve business outcomes.
  • Share best practices across teams to support alignment and consistency within a value stream.
  • Foster an innovative, inclusive, and diverse team environment that promotes positive culture, collaboration, and self-organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
