About The Position

Under direction from the agency principal and/or agency management, the Agency Safety Representative works to monitor, coordinate, and continuously improve the agency’s safety compliance program. This role involves monitoring safety performance, developing safety goals and incentives, and ensuring compliance with various transportation and safety regulations. The representative will handle safety notifications, coordinate fines and chargebacks, and analyze safety data to identify trends and areas for improvement. They will also coordinate safety training, develop policies for safe dispatching, and manage van operator logs and hours of service. Encouraging the reporting of safety issues and resolving non-compliance problems are key aspects, with the authority to recommend corrective actions, including termination. A significant focus will be on hours-of-service compliance, particularly for new and underperforming van operators.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety, Transportation, Communications, or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 2 years of safety-related experience in the transportation or moving industry required.
  • Working knowledge of DOT guidelines, OSHA compliance, hazardous material handling and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Act, including the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, Word).
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and time management skills.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to develop creative solutions and strategies regarding location Safety needs.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the agency’s Safety Performance Rating (SPR) with senior management.
  • Set and reinforce agency and van operator safety goals.
  • Develop incentives and/or recognition programs for positive safety performance.
  • Ensure compliance with agency and UniGroup safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) safety regulations and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), including van operator qualifications, vehicle inspections, safety evaluation systems, substance abuse testing, accident analysis/prevention, vehicle licensing and permit issuance, and log submissions and hours of service tracking.
  • Receive and respond to safety notifications such as safety alerts, items coming due (CDL’s, V/O medicals, insurance, vehicle inspections, missing logs), and CSA and UniGroup policy violations.
  • Coordinate fines for untimely log submissions and chargebacks for licensing fees.
  • Problem-solve agency/van operator performance issues.
  • Identify safety compliance successes, problems, and trends; prepare profiles; monitor progress; and produce/distribute safety statistical information.
  • Coordinate safety training, awareness, monitoring, and problem resolution for van operators and associates.
  • Develop policies and procedures around safe dispatching of vehicles.
  • Review and audit van operator logs.
  • Communicate strategies on estimating time for shipments and alternatives for out-of-hours situations.
  • Manage on-call procedures during non-working hours for out-of-service issues, accidents, and major losses.
  • Encourage identification and reporting of safety issues or concerns.
  • Identify and resolve non-compliance problems.
  • Make recommendations for corrective action, up to and including termination.
  • Participate in training, monitoring, and corrective action plans for hours-of-service compliance, focusing on new and underperforming van operators.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Manager.
