About The Position

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking an Agency Attorney, Level 1, to join its Bureau of Legal Affairs (BLA). The BLA advances DSNY's policy initiatives, provides legal counsel to various divisions, and offers legislative support. The selected candidate will perform legal work under supervision, including researching legal issues, preparing legal opinions, recommending courses of action, representing the Department at meetings, coordinating Freedom of Information Law requests, advising on conflicts of interest, and preparing responses to litigation inquiries.

Requirements

• Admission to the New York State Bar
• One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar
• Must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment

Nice To Haves

• Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086)
• To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.
• To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

Responsibilities

• Working directly with the Department's Executive staff on legal matters including researching legal issues, preparing legal opinions, and recommending courses of action on issues impacting the Department
• Representing the Department at meetings on issues relating to enforcement of the Department's statutes and rules, and overall solid waste management planning
• Coordinating and responding to Freedom of Information Law requests
• Advising on conflicts of interest matters and working with the Conflict-of-Interest Board
• Advising on legal aspects of enforcement and administration of laws and regulations
• Preparing responses to litigation inquiries and information subpoenas
