About The Position

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is the nation's largest municipal sanitation agency, responsible for collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning City streets, and removing snow and ice. The Bureau of Legal Affairs (BLA) supports DSNY's mission by advancing policy initiatives, providing legal counsel, and ensuring lawful implementation and enforcement of laws and rules. BLA is seeking an Agency Attorney, Level 1, to perform legal work under supervision, including researching legal issues, preparing legal opinions, representing the Department in meetings, coordinating Freedom of Information Law requests, advising on conflicts of interest, and preparing responses to litigation inquiries.

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar
  • One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar
  • Must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment

Nice To Haves

  • Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086)
  • One year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment (for AL II)
  • Two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment (for AL III)

Responsibilities

  • Working directly with the Department's Executive staff on legal matters including researching legal issues, preparing legal opinions, and recommending courses of action on issues impacting the Department
  • Representing the Department at meetings on issues relating to enforcement of the Department's statutes and rules, and overall solid waste management planning
  • Coordinating and responding to Freedom of Information Law requests
  • Advising on conflicts of interest matters and working with the Conflict-of-Interest Board
  • Advising on legal aspects of enforcement and administration of laws and regulations
  • Preparing responses to litigation inquiries and information subpoenas
