About The Position

The New York City Police Department's Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters (DCLM) provides legal guidance to the Police Department. The DCLM is responsible for advising all members of the Department on legal matters, including major criminal and civil litigation, and legislative and judicial developments. The office monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the criminal justice system, assists members in interpreting and enforcing laws, ensures lawful and fair application of policies, and develops legislation. The Legal Bureau's Legislative Affairs Unit specifically handles the NYPD's involvement in the legislative process at all levels. Attorneys in this unit negotiate, draft, and review legislation, collaborate with legislative offices, and prepare Department members for legislative hearings.

Requirements

  • Admission to the New York State Bar.
  • One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar.
  • Must remain a Member of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of employment.
  • Two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment (to be assigned to AL III).

Nice To Haves

  • Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).

Responsibilities

  • Draft and review proposed city, state and federal legislation.
  • Prepare members of the service for hearings before legislative bodies.
  • Conduct legal research on legislative matters of interest to the Department.
  • Liaise with the Mayor's Office of Legislative Affairs and elected officials on a variety of local legislative issues.
  • Issue guidance regarding enacted legislation to members of the service.
