The New York City Police Department's License Division administers the laws and rules pertaining to the Police Commissioner’s power to grant handgun licenses, rifle and shotgun permits, dealer’s licenses, gunsmith licenses, small arms range designations, and Special Patrolman designations. The Division accepts, processes, investigates, and grants or denies applications for these licenses and designations within the applicable laws, rules and Department policies. It is also responsible for cancelling, monitoring and suspending or revoking these licenses and designations, in order to protect and promote public safety. The division is additionally responsible for adapting to rapidly changing State and local rules and law following the Supreme Court of the United States recent decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen.
