About The Position

To provide nutritional information and education to program participants. This is an entry-level position with close supervision. The role involves learning to provide instruction through various methods, distributing information, teaching proper food preparation and storage, assisting with outreach activities for programs like EFNEP, Healthy Beginnings, SNAP-ED, and WIC. Responsibilities include preparing educational materials, interacting with community partners, tracking participant measurements, and potentially assisting with classes on parenting and money management. The educator may accompany higher-level staff on visits and will become familiar with program guidelines and participant screening. Maintaining participant information in an electronic system, documenting lessons, and assisting with reporting are also key duties. This is a grant-funded position for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP).

Requirements

  • No specialized training or experience required.
  • Knowledge of the community to include living within the assigned parish (currently or previously) is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and insured automobile.
  • Must be able to demonstrate basic computer skills and effective verbal, written, and listening skills.
  • Must be able to transport supplies and equipment (up to 30 lbs.).
  • Will travel daily within parish(s) assigned and occasional out of parish for professional development and training.
  • May work flexible hours including early mornings, evenings, and/or weekends for nutrition education classes or participate in community events promoting health and nutrition.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction to program participants through games, multi-media, demonstrations, etc.
  • Provide brochures and other information relative to the assigned program.
  • Teach proper methods of food preparation and storage consistent with food safety standards.
  • Assist in conducting outreach and related activities for an assigned nutritional program.
  • Prepare bulletin boards and distribute information at health units, universities, etc.
  • Provide program information to community partners and form relationships to recruit program participants and volunteers.
  • Take basic measurements of program participants to track nutritional and health goals.
  • Assist in teaching classes on parenting, money management, and other topics as relative to the program.
  • Accompany higher-level educators on home visits and/or to vendor locations.
  • Become familiar with the assigned program and screen potential participants for program eligibility.
  • Provide basic information about the program such as program guidelines, use of EBT cards, nutrition education, etc.
  • Maintain program participant information and records in an electronic system.
  • Use the system to schedule appointments, load EBT cards, print resources for participants, etc.
  • Assist on site visits by documenting stock levels and product pricing.
  • Maintain supplies for educational purposes, such as visual aids and cooking demonstrations.
  • Document lessons, such as resources used and participation counts.
  • Assist in preparing state and federal reports.
  • Make referrals to other assistance programs as needed.
  • Recruit and enroll limited resource school-aged youth and adults who meet the federal eligibility guidelines to participate in EFNEP.
  • Teach and lead nutrition education classes and activities in the community to target audiences.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships to extend EFNEP outreach with agencies and organizations that serve eligible audiences.
