About The Position

The City of Graham Recreation and Parks Department is seeking enthusiastic and dependable individuals to join our Afterschool Program! This position is responsible for providing a safe, positive, and engaging environment for children in Kindergarten through 8th grade while assisting with homework, leading activities, supervising participants, and supporting daily program operations. Under immediate supervision, perform a variety of activities for the daily group programming, discipline, direct supervision and management of children in an afterschool program. Should act as a role model to school age children (Kindergarten-8th grades) by exemplifying the Vision and Mission of the Graham Recreation and Parks Department, specifically the Programs Division, while conducting age-appropriate activities in a safe, fun, and comfortable atmosphere.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of and the ability to communicate the rules and expectations of age appropriate activities
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the work assigned
  • Knowledge of safe work practices and ability to perform custodial duties of the position
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public
  • Prior experience working with school aged children
  • Applicant should possess First Aid/CPR/AED certification or complete a certification course offered by the City of Graham
  • Attendance at additional training offered by the city is required
  • Selected candidate must submit to and pass a background check and drug screen prior to employment

Nice To Haves

  • A valid North Carolina driver’s license and high school diploma or equivalent is preferred
  • A CDL driver’s license (with a Passenger endorsement) and/or experience operating a passenger vehicle or activity bus is highly preferred
  • Applicants under age 16 must provide a valid NCDOL worker’s permit

Responsibilities

  • Supervise children divided into groups based on grade (K-8th grade)
  • Assist participants with homework and other age-appropriate educational activities
  • Plan, organize, and implement activities including crafts, sports, wellness, games, music, drama, field trips, etc.
  • Monitor participant behavior and address disciplinary concerns appropriately
  • Communicate safety concerns, behavioral issues, injuries, or other incidents to the appropriate supervisor
  • Collect data for daily check-in and check-out reports and maintain records
  • Assist with set-up and breakdown of activities and cleaning of program area
  • Maintain positive and appropriate relations with children, parents, staff, etc.
  • Attend and participate in program activities, staff meetings, staff trainings, etc.
  • Provide emergency response as per training when necessary
  • Other tasks may be assigned as necessary
