About The Position

An After-School Youth Development Professional believes that all students can learn, problem-solve, and think at high levels. They also believe that all students need to feel valued, safe, and successful, and should experience personally meaningful learning experiences and choices. Furthermore, they believe that families need to be engaged in their child's learning and development. This role involves actively supervising students and volunteers, engaging with students, leading small groups in fun and engaging activities, and mentoring students in various interest areas. The professional will lead and mentor students in a positive, respectful, and caring manner, work effectively as a team, and be responsible for knowing and executing emergency procedures. They will also help students resolve conflict using de-escalation strategies, foster an environment of discourse and respect, assist with program activities and special events, and maintain a safe and clean environment. Additionally, they will keep an inventory of room supplies, participate in ongoing training, demonstrate proficiency in technology, and have an understanding of childcare regulations and procedures. Commitment to excellent attendance and punctuality is expected, along with performing other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience.
  • Proven ability to establish relationships within the organization to enhance the care given to youth and families.
  • Ability to work scheduled hours.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work both independently and as a team in a diverse environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to adapt to day-to-day needs of the organization.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, organize, and conduct work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Work is organized and completed on time.

Responsibilities

  • Position yourself in the program area to actively supervise the assigned area, volunteers, and students to ensure the health and safety of all individuals.
  • Position yourself in the program area to actively engage with students at all times.
  • Lead small groups of students with fun and engaging activities that allow for student choice and interests.
  • Ability to mentor students in an interest area such as Music, Theater, Visual Arts, STEM, Culinary Arts, Learning with Nature, Sports and Wellness, Photography and Graphic Arts, Leadership, or Robotics.
  • Lead and mentor students in a positive, respectful, and caring manner, showing kindness and patience in all interactions with students, staff, and families.
  • Effectively work as a team with other Youth Development Professionals and staff.
  • Responsible for knowing and executing all emergency procedures, as appropriate.
  • Help students resolve conflict using de-escalation strategies.
  • Foster an environment of discourse and respect.
  • Assist with program activities and special events.
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment, while keeping a continual inventory of room supplies, reporting on any condition issues.
  • Participate in ongoing training related to safety and positive youth development practices.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the use of technology, including Microsoft Office, SMART board, Document Cameras, Google Docs, and Chromebooks, including troubleshooting for the use of this technology.
  • Understanding of childcare regulations and procedures.
  • Commitment to excellent attendance and punctuality.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
