About The Position

SmartStart Education seeks a small group ELA tutor to work with small groups of K-12th grade school students on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Each small group consists of 3-5 students who have been identified as struggling with fundamental ELA skills. The tutor will work with each group several times throughout the week at local shelters in Dayton, OH. Tutors should be flexible and comfortable within shelter settings. Each tutor will be responsible for taking daily attendance and monitoring student progress using a personal device.

Requirements

  • Possession of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in any field.
  • Demonstrated experience of at least one year in teaching or tutoring, either within a school environment or another educational setting.
  • Mastery of K-12 school ELA concepts and skills.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the unique challenges faced by urban students, schools, and communities, encompassing racial disparity, socio-economic disparity, and cultural disparity.
  • Genuine passion and unwavering commitment towards fostering the success of students.
  • Exemplary punctuality, ensuring timely attendance and adherence to established schedules.
  • Proficiency in communication skills.
  • Ability to comfortably commute to the designated location.
  • Ability to comfortably navigate a shelter environment, including walking through hallways, shared rooms, and stairways throughout the workday.
