About The Position

The Assistant Director supports the Site Director in providing leadership, supervision, and guidance for the Y After School program. This position helps ensure the overall safety, well-being, and positive engagement of program participants while supporting staff and maintaining effective communication with children, families, coworkers, and administration. The Assistant Director assists with planning, implementing, and facilitating a structured daily schedule that includes engaging, developmentally appropriate activities aligned with YMCA values. This role requires high energy, enthusiasm, patience, and a genuine enjoyment of working with children. The Assistant Director is expected to model positive relationship-building skills, maintain program and licensing standards, support attendance and daily operations, and actively participate with children in indoor and outdoor activities. Supervises a group of children alongside the After School Aides/Director and is responsible for their overall health and wellbeing. Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical emergencies, behavior policy implementation, child abuse prevention and all other emergency situations. Cultivates positive relationships and maintains effective communication with parents, children and other staff. Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Maintains ongoing communication with the Site Director. Sets up and cleans up after all Y After School activities. Performs other duties as assigned. Provides careful, attentive supervision; alert at all times. Assists in taking group attendance. Maintains program site and school property. Assists in planning and implementing program activities that are engaging, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values. Adheres to program standards regarding safety, cleanliness, and adherence to licensing protocol. Attends training and staff meetings.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Six months of program experience with children, preferably in an after school setting.
  • Preferred CPR/First Aid. If not certified, will receive training through the YMCA.
  • Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Experience in creating, planning, and facilitating interactive and educational/artistic activities relating to youth development, physical fitness, and academic enrichment.
  • Must possess speaking, listening, and writing skills appropriate for interacting with both children and adults.
  • Must be capable of implementing directives related to the daily program.
  • Must have flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of YMCA mission, purpose and goals, childcare policies and YMCA standards; ensures the program meets the highest standards of excellence.
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise as well as participate in program activities.

  • Ensure there is a positive culture for responding and reporting for employees and volunteers.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with youth.
  • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk and prevention.
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the YMCA’s progressive discipline policy.
  • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Communicate to all employees and volunteers the YMCA’s commitment to zero tolerance of abuse to youth.
  • Report essential abuse risk management information to the board of directors.
  • Adhere to screening requirements for Minor Employees and use screening instruments designed to assess for abuse risk.
  • Communicate to all Minor Employees the YMCA’s commitment to protect their youth from abuse.
  • Provide Minor Employees with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provide Minor Employees with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with youth.
  • Require Minor Employees to adhere to policies/procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the YMCA’s progressive discipline policy.
  • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
