About The Position

This position will provide Aerothermal analysis support to the Aerosciences branch (EV33) in the Structural Design and Analysis Division (EV30) at the MSFC’s Spacecraft and Vehicle Systems Department. Aerothermal team performs various aerothermodynamic analyses that include aerodynamic heating, plume modeling, and plume/surface interactions.

Requirements

  • A degree from an ABET accredited university is preferred.
  • Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a BS with at least 10+ years (or Masters with 8+ years or PhD with 4+ years) of relevant experience.
  • Experience in theoretical/computational analyses of fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, and aerodynamics of space transportation vehicles.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, FORTRAN, MATLAB and their application to modeling and simulation.
  • Knowledge of space transportation vehicle design, functions, terminology, interfaces, technical disciplines, and system design.
  • Experience with command line interfaces and the Linux operating system.
  • Experience with managing large datasets and extracting data to find out and communicate trends in data.
  • Familiarity with plumes, plume induced environments or plume modeling.
  • Familiarity with Calorimetry or Radiometry.
  • Familiarity with aerothermal ground test and flight data post-processing and analysis.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and effective team players with customer relations skills, familiar with working in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring focus and attention to detail and completed within prescribed organizational schedules.
  • Ability to be flexible and easily refocus on tasks when task directions or requirements change.
  • Ability to interface and collaborate with all levels of engineering and project management with the ability to lead and influence consensus.
  • Demonstrated experience building strong working relationships with multiple stakeholders, organizing, and facilitating meetings/technical discussions.
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams & Outlook) are required.
  • Excellent written and oral technical communication skills, with the ability to clearly define and describe a technical subject to peers across various engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering program-level briefings and capability to communicate with program level stakeholders and partners.
  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%).
  • Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to perform engineering tasks and write reports (85%).
  • Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Amentum facilities (5%).
  • Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
  • Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday.
  • A REAL ID-compliant license/ID or another acceptable form of identification to access federal facilities.
  • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%).
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform aerothermodynamic analyses and apply physics-based models for the prediction of thermal environments and loads on various surfaces of space transportation vehicles.
  • Apply engineering techniques and procedures to analyze and evaluate specific problems, data, or other work features that are broad in scope and complexity.
  • Review and evaluate the quantity, quality, and overall adequacy of results and conclusions drawn from various engineering tasks.
  • Prepare and present analyses results to technical teams and review boards.
  • Develop and deliver analyses products, documents, presentations, and action item responses.
  • Participate in reviews, meetings, teleconferences, and working groups.
  • Communicate issues, best practices, lessons-learned and other technical positions related to aerothermal analyses.
  • Identify, describe, and communicate potential risks.
  • Deliver project briefings to all levels of management.
  • Provide clear and effective communications with internal and external partners and stakeholders.
