Aerodynamic Wind Tunnel Test Engineer

Torch Technologies, Inc.•Arnold AFB, TN
•Onsite

About The Position

Torch Technologies is seeking a Test Engineer to support the 716th Test Squadron at the Arnold Engineering Development Complex (AEDC). The role plans, executes, and analyzes complex aerodynamic and propulsion-integration testing in AEDC wind tunnels and associated facilities. It applies engineering principles, engineering tool development, and experimental techniques to collect aerodynamic data for weapons systems across a wide range of flight conditions. The engineer is responsible for all phases of testing, from initial concept and design through final reporting. The position is onsite at Arnold AFB, Tennessee. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; during test execution, the engineer may occasionally be assigned to first, second, or third shift to support the Test Squadron schedule. Travel is 0–10%, relocation assistance is available, and the position is not contingent upon a contract award.

Requirements

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering or science discipline.
  • Experience with aerodynamic performance and testing concepts.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing detailed technical reports and presenting findings to customers and leadership.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Direct test engineering experience in high-speed closed-loop aerodynamic wind tunnels.
  • Experience troubleshooting instrumentation.
  • Proficiency with 3-D CAD modeling.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and Python programming skills.
  • Active Secret security clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with customers, test managers, and a multidisciplinary test team to define objectives, scope, and requirements for aerodynamic wind tunnel tests, including store separation, stability and control, inlet integration, control effectiveness, jet interaction, and heat transfer.
  • Develop test plans, test matrices, instrumentation requirements, data-acquisition strategies, and safety protocols.
  • Interpret pre-test simulations and analyses to select appropriate instrumentation, such as strain-gage balances, pressure transducers, accelerometers, and high-speed imaging systems.
  • Develop and maintain documentation of test setups, procedures, and results.
  • Oversee installation and calibration of test articles and instrumentation in the wind tunnel.
  • Monitor wind tunnel equipment during testing to ensure data quality and compliance with safety procedures.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues during testing and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with wind tunnel operators, instrumentation technicians, and other support personnel to ensure efficient test execution.
  • Ensure testing complies with technical go/no-go requirements and AEDC safety policies.
  • Process and analyze datasets acquired during testing using specialized software tools.
  • Prepare comprehensive test reports documenting procedures, results, and conclusions.
  • Present findings to customers and stakeholders through briefings, presentations, and written reports.
  • Maintain knowledge of aerodynamic theory and emerging experimental techniques and advancements in wind tunnel testing.
  • Contribute to development of test methodologies and capabilities within AEDC and the 716th Test Squadron.
