Under the supervision of the EMS Captain, the AEMT provides advanced life support and directly assists with on-scene ALS emergency care for sick and injured patients. The employee responds to 911 calls, renders medical assistance, and transports patients to an appropriate medical facility. Compared with an EMT, this position requires additional specialized instruction in advanced pre-hospital care interventions and assessment techniques, as well as more annual continuing education. The role includes patient care, operation and maintenance of emergency vehicles and pre-hospital medical equipment, radio communications, and completion of patient care, billing, and incident reports. The employee is accountable for their vehicle, station, knowledge, patient care, documentation, confidentiality, equipment, and supplies, and provides medical care under physician direction and applicable state statutes. The position has no supervisory responsibility. Job-related decisions are reviewed by the immediate supervisor, EMS director, and Department Medical Quality Assurance Coordinator. The job involves ongoing contact with other emergency agencies, the public, patients, family members, and healthcare providers. Work may involve stressful and chaotic circumstances, exposure to bloodborne pathogens or bodily fluids, critically ill patients, graphic injuries, death, and dying. The employee may be called out 24 hours a day, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, and may work very long hours. Physical demands include standing and walking, handling and reaching, and occasional climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Lifting and moving up to 100 pounds may be necessary in emergencies, and moving patients weighing over 200 pounds from the floor to a cot and loading them into an ambulance is part of the work.
