About The Position

The Advocacy Director & Public Grants Administrator (“ADPGA”) is responsible for advocacy, civic engagement, and public policy initiatives on behalf of SAAF. The ADPGA will support clients, staff, and SAAF’s public policy goals across local, state, and federal political institutions. This will include prospecting, preparing, writing, submitting, and managing grant proposals and submissions for SAAF’s grant proposals to local, state, and federal government entities. The ADPGA is responsible for working with program and finance staff to collect and coordinate program statistics, budget information, personal stories, etc. to incorporate into the grant writing. The ADPGA is a full-time, Tucson local, exempt position. This position reports to the Chief Executive Officer.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Social Work, Public Health, Political Science, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience in advocacy, community engagement, public policy, or coalition building.
  • Experience developing community leaders and advancing initiatives that result in systems or policy change.
  • At least 3 years of professional government and foundation grant writing experience.
  • Exceptional professional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and establish realistic timelines and work independently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, including federal, state and local funders, staff, and general public.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information.

Responsibilities

  • Builds and sustains a network of engaged community members participating in advocacy and civic leadership.
  • Designs and implements community engagement pathways that move individuals from outreach to leadership and advocacy roles.
  • Leads nonpartisan civic engagement efforts to increase participation in public decision-making.
  • Advances policy initiatives and systems improvements at local, county, state, and federal levels.
  • Tracks legislation, coordinates advocacy efforts, and supports public testimony, storytelling, and engagement with media and policymakers.
  • Plans and oversees community forums, trainings, and outreach events, and supports staff and partner capacity building in advocacy and engagement.
  • Builds and maintains partnerships with community organizations, public agencies, and cross-sector stakeholders, while collaborating across departments to integrate advocacy into organizational strategy, strengthen internal alignment, and advance community impact goals.
  • Ensures that advocacy work and civic engagement adhere to local, state, and federal governmental regulations, and other applicable rules and requirements.
  • Responsible for prospecting, researching, initiating, writing, and stewardship for funding from government and foundation grants each year.
  • Leads federal grant proposal development and submission—preparing and organizing materials for proposals and submitting and monitoring grant applications.
  • Drafts proposals/LOIs, grant application narratives, and budgets and collaborates to finalize with program staff, finance, and Chief Programs Officer (“CPO”) and CEO.
  • Submitting grant applications via paper or online portals and maintaining confidentiality and accessibility of login information.
  • Maintaining master calendar of grants and prospects and all associated files and correspondence.
  • Maintaining library of grant support documents including resumes, bios, IRS forms, Board/staff diversity lists, etc.
  • Work with appropriate departments to facilitate federal grant contracts/agreements and monitor and advise on grant deliverables.
  • Maintains current records, both printed and digital, and a calendar of grant opportunity deadlines and reporting deadlines.
  • Effectively communicates deadlines to program and finance staff to collect necessary information for proposals and reports.
  • Develops and oversees internal process of coordinating grant proposal preparation.
  • Coordinates the proposal writing process with the Chiefs, Directors, Development, program staff, and finance staff.
  • Responsible for monitoring and maintaining grant reporting schedules and requirements.
  • Ensures the preparation and submission of progress and final reports to the funder in the appropriate timeframes.
  • Provide grant report updates for the CPO.
  • Attends program managers meetings and runs relevant meetings related to government grants.
  • Other duties as assigned.
