About The Position

The Advocacy Coordinator supports the Director and Associate Director of Education and Advocacy in implementing the advocacy strategy, leveraging the resources and networks of KBI, a Catholic organization located at the US-Mexico border, to promote humane and just migration policy. The Employee shall be a minister of the Gospel and Catholic Teaching both academically and behaviorally while at work and in his/her personal life, “…Live in a manner worthy of the call you have received.” (Eph. 4:1).

Requirements

  • At least two years of experience in non‑profit social services, advocacy, community organizing, education or ministry, preferably with migrants, border communities, or other vulnerable populations.
  • Knowledge of and experience with advocacy strategy for humane and just migration policies.
  • Undergraduate degree or higher studies in public policy, political science, law, education, social work, religious studies, Latin American studies, international relations, or another related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in public policy, political science, law, education, social work, religious studies, Latin American studies, international affairs, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Familiarity with the Catholic Church and the ability to effectively communicate the connection between Catholic identity and the work of KBI.
  • A deep personal commitment to accompaniment of migrants and to work towards humane and just migration policy.
  • Ability to reflect deeply, question dominant narratives, and be consistently attentive to the voices and experiences of those most affected by government migration policies.
  • Ability to work comfortably in a Catholic‑inspired organizational setting that is inclusive and welcoming to people of diverse beliefs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong listening skills, and attention to detail in both program coordination and public communication.
  • Possess strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Fluent written and verbal communication in English and Spanish is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferably, have familiarity with the US–Mexico border region, contemporary migration issues and trends, and US/Mexico immigration policy, or willingness and ability to learn these quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Recognize and support the unique Catholic Mission of the Diocese by speaking, acting, and instructing consistent with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • Give evidence of living Gospel values by being an active member of a faith community and being open to the importance of a personal faith journey; strive to model the teaching of Jesus by attitude and example.
  • Support advocacy staff with documenting abuses, both in the US and Mexico, training others to document abuses, and other relevant accountability and monitoring projects as needed.
  • Coordinate KBI's strategy for collecting and documenting the testimony from people who come to our center for the first time, or who interact with us during monitoring, including the training of colleagues and volunteers.
  • Keep statistics, databases and processes conducive to effective advocacy work.
  • Cultivate strategic partnerships with other immigrant advocacy organizations to identify opportunities for KBI’s compelling stories and data to inform and support the broader advocacy movement.
  • In partnership with other staff, implement the strategic plan for advocacy efforts in the US and Mexico that is attentive to the realities experienced by the migrants that KBI accompanies.
  • Support building and maintaining connections with Congressional offices (at both the Federal and AZ State level) to inform them and persuade them to champion policies that promote the dignity of migrants.
  • Maintain a relevant and up-to-date presentation about the immigration context in the U.S. and support the education team with presentations for groups visiting the KBI.
  • In collaboration with other education and advocacy staff, plan, implement and update advocacy trainings for volunteers and other leaders at KBI partner institutions.
