About The Position

Provides instructional support to teachers. The goal of the position is to help improve teacher practice through specific teacher assistance plans and make recommendations for job retention. The Advisor – Peer Assistance & Review works with a caseload of teachers identified using teacher effectiveness data and in collaboration with school leaders. He/she acts as the primary support for these teachers and works with them to help them meet the goals identified in the intervention plan and District performance standards. The Advisor will work under the direction of the Human Resources Office of Induction and Development and the PAR Panel collaborating with school leaders, school staff and District offices to provide maximum assistance to teachers assigned to the PAR caseload. The Advisor will be responsible for preparing and submitting to the PAR Panel summary documentation regarding future employment status of each teacher on their caseload.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with coursework in human resources, educational administration, curriculum development, training development or related behavioral sciences required
  • A minimum of four (4) years of related experience for a total of eight (8) years.
  • Valid TN Teacher License required.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes teacher performance data including formal observations to summarize evaluations and student assessment data to make recommendations to school leaders about which teachers should be assigned to a PAR caseload.
  • Sets specific goals for PAR teacher improvement based on teacher performance and student learning; plans and communicates to PAR teachers a time-bound, intensive program of intervention and support; Adapts plan as necessary to respond to teachers evolving needs.
  • Provides direct support identified in the intervention plans; Uses a variety of methods to support teacher improvement such as conferencing, co-planning, conducting of classroom observations and providing feedback, modeling best practices, leading demonstration lessons, co-teaching, and supporting self-reflection.
  • Provides a written recommendation for review by school leaders and the PAR Panel at the conclusion of the support year about whether the teacher should be re-elected, non-renewed, or dismissed; demonstrate confidence, objectivity and thoroughness in communicating findings and recommendations; Provides recommended next steps for further improvement for PAR teachers that the Advisor recommends continuing teaching in MSCS.
  • Develops transition plans for teachers who are recommended to continue as MSCS teachers. Shares transition plans with school leaders and develop consistent cycle of follow-up to ensure plans are followed.
  • Helps design and deliver District-wide professional development sessions, as required.
  • Supports the Executive Director of Talent Management and Manager – HR Talent, Induction & Development with efforts to staff MSCS’s traditional and turnaround schools with a quality teaching pool underpinned by continuous improvement; supports in development and implementation of a comprehensive, inclusive, and creative support plan aimed at improving the overall student experience; support in the implementation of the Memphis Teacher of Excellence High School Pipeline program.
  • Advises and secures understanding and capability to work internally with strategic partners cross-functionally and collaboratively on induction and retention related projects specifically related to the support and development of struggling teachers.
  • Supports the goals, plans and progress of the District pipelines, induction, development, and retention on a consistent basis by sharing data relative to the support and development of struggling teachers.
  • Supports with the plans and collaborates with school system principals to provide support for beginning teachers at school sites, including facilitating professional learning for new teachers and mentors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or directed.
