About The Position

Reporting to the Superintendent, Health & Safety, this position will be a fly in- fly out 3x3 rotation based in Nunavut, Canada. The role is responsible for ensuring a safe environment for all project employees, contractors, and visitors. It involves promoting and implementing controls to ensure compliance with relevant acts and regulations, and driving continuous improvement of performance through Health & Safety programs and procedures. The position requires regular assessments of underground workplaces, collaboration with mine engineers and geologists on ground stability, conducting safety inspections, assisting with incident investigations, and developing job hazard analyses. Additionally, the role involves facilitating H&S related courses, implementing strategies for ventilation, performing theoretical and practical training on heavy equipment, and developing/maintaining training programs and matrices.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of experience in a Health and Safety Officer role with significant experience in underground operations, training on H&S courses, in the mining or construction industry.
  • Post Secondary Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety.
  • A Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation or equivalent.
  • Completion of WSCC Supervisor Level II.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure a safe environment for all project employees, contractors, and visitors.
  • Promote and implement controls to ensure compliance with relevant acts and regulations.
  • Promote continuous improvement of performance through Health & Safety programs and procedures.
  • Conduct regular assessments of underground workplaces to identify potential health and safety hazards.
  • Collaborate with mine engineers and geologists to assess ground stability and subsidence risks.
  • Conduct safety related inspections.
  • Assist with incident investigations.
  • Aid departments with job hazard analysis development to ensure compliance of relevant acts, regulations, and B2Gold Nunavut's Health & Safety programs.
  • Facilitate H&S related courses including but not limited to; site safety induction, first aid, mine rescue, and WHMIS.
  • Implement strategies to monitor and maintain proper ventilation in underground mining areas.
  • Perform theoretical training in a classroom environment and practical training at the worksite on Heavy Equipment.
  • Develop, maintain and update training programs, evaluations, and position-based training matrixes.
