The College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Virginia is seeking to find an Academic Advising Dean. This role is a senior-level academic advisor who provides specialized services for undergraduate students in the College. Academic Advising Deans handle complex matters such as working with students on academic warning or suspension, coordinating university resources for students, processing appeals to academic decisions, and working with students in crisis. Each semester Advising Deans oversee the academic audit to identify students in potential academic jeopardy and help them develop a plan for working toward graduation. Advising Deans also teach within the College’s General Education curriculum, the highlight of which are the Engagements, a sequence of courses that celebrate learning while introducing first-year students to the liberal arts and sciences through cross-disciplinary seminar topics. Academic Advising Deans will model a culture of student-centered approaches to advising. Most academic Advising Deans work with a general population of students, but they may be assigned to a specialized portfolio of students, such as athletes, veterans, transfers or Echols scholars. Academic Advising Deans will be expected to participate in professional development activities and will also mentor early-career advisors and act as a resource to faculty and/or departments seeking guidance on various issues. Advising Deans in the College of Arts & Sciences have a demonstrated commitment to the Liberal Arts and Sciences, an ability to understand the College curriculum and an ability to help students navigate academic policies. Critically, advising deans demonstrate an empathetic and student-centered approach to support students' intellectual and emotional development.
