About The Position

The College of Arts and Sciences Advising Commons is seeking an Advising Assistant for the 2026/27 academic year. This Federal Work-Study position involves assisting students with academic and career exploration, providing information on courses and degree progress, and helping them utilize university resources. The assistant will also support departmental tasks such as managing job postings, website maintenance, and social media.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Enjoy working with students and faculty.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
  • Ability to help students navigate various University and CAS technology platforms (including Self Service, CAS 360, and QUCC).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a role involving direct student contact (e.g., RA, peer catalyst/tutor, or orientation leader).
  • Experience as a Learning Commons-trained peer tutor or catalyst.
  • Experience in another peer instructional role.

Responsibilities

  • Engage in conversations with students about academic and career options, especially for undeclared majors.
  • Assist students in finding course placement information and identifying open courses.
  • Guide students in understanding their progress towards another major and the process of changing majors.
  • Help students understand their progress towards degree completion.
  • Utilize resources to help students connect academic studies with career opportunities.
  • Explore career options with students.
  • Assist students in creating initial college-level resumes and LinkedIn profiles.
  • Prepare students for job or internship interviews.
  • Discuss on- and off-campus experiential learning opportunities, including study abroad, internships, co-curricular activities, and shadowing.
  • Assist with job postings.
  • Perform website maintenance.
  • Support marketing and social media efforts.
  • Undertake other duties as assigned.
