About The Position

The AdviseTX Hybrid Program at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, in partnership with the College Advising Corps and AmeriCorps, seeks highly motivated recent college graduates (within the last 5 years) to serve full-time as College Advisers. AdviseTX places Advisers in San Antonio area high schools to work alongside counselors and other college access organizations. Using a near-peer model, our goal is to encourage and assist high school students with college applications, financial aid, scholarship searches, and the transition to post-secondary education. This is a grant funded position. Grant funded positions are time-limited and are contingent upon sufficient grant funding.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in related field.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, and ability to travel within the San Antonio, TX area.
  • Flexible to attend events/meetings outside regular hours.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; represent CAC, AmeriCorps, and TAMUSA professionally.
  • Skilled in communication, Microsoft Office, and digital tools.
  • Able to mentor high school students and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree earned between May 2021-2026.
  • Experience working with high school students; and/or students from communities with limited access to higher education opportunities, such as in college admissions, advising, or mentoring programs.
  • Experience in leadership in mentoring, project management, and decision making.

Responsibilities

  • Serve in a hybrid (on-site and virtual) role at 1-2 San Antonio area high schools to increase college preparation and enrollment.
  • Provide personalized admissions and financial aid support to students and families.
  • Assist students with admissions and financial aid applications and create individualized college timelines.
  • Use digital tools (video conferencing, text, email, AI, phone) for personalized advising.
  • Offer college advising in classrooms, assemblies, and student meetings.
  • Utilize an AI Chatbot in coordination with College Advising Corps with students and families to maximize outreach.
  • Establish a professional online presence (social media, website, blog) for communication.
  • Engage families in supporting students’ college plans.
  • Plan events with community organizations and universities to promote college preparation, including Decision Day.
  • Assess school needs with the AdviseTX Director and school staff to tailor college and career programming.
  • Build relationships with principals, counselors, and teachers.
  • Participate in extracurricular activities to empower students and strengthen the college-going culture.
  • Record service data using the College Advising Corps’ GRACE system.
  • Submit progress reports to the AdviseTX Director.
  • Support and attend evening/weekend events and assist other Advisers.
  • Stay current in admissions and financial aid advising.
  • Display the AmeriCorps logo at your service site.
  • Provide direct service at your service-site, and log hours accurately in the AmeriCorps online reporting system.
  • Adhere to all guidelines of AmeriCorps and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
  • Serve in other volunteer opportunities at the direction of the program director
