About The Position

Established in 1963, Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI is a part of the Cal Poly Pomona Division of Student Affairs with a dashed reporting line to Administrative Affairs. ASI serves the entire campus population, including over 26,000 students, by providing opportunities for student engagement, student employment, and a multitude of programs and services such as recreation and wellness, student union and activities, student government, and childcare. ASI operational support areas include human resources, financial services, information technology, facilities management, and marketing. Under general supervision from the Adventure Education Coordinator, the Adventures Instructor III is responsible for promoting the Adventures program at the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC) and leading advanced on-campus workshops, clinics, and special events. The Adventures Instructor III offers programming and engaging instruction utilizing established best practices in group settings and performs skilled tasks requiring advanced certification, specialized knowledge, prior relevant experience and considerable independent judgment and decision-making.

Requirements

  • Minimum three years of formal teaching and/or instructing experience, required
  • Current certification provider status for one or more of the following programs: AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor AMGA Single Pitch Instructor NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Aid NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Responder LNT Master Trainer ACA Kayak I or II
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to act calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct
  • Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations
  • Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively and work productively without close supervision
  • Ability to operate a computer workstation using word processing, spreadsheet and other computer applications in use
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community
  • Ability to satisfactorily complete a background check (including a criminal records check)

Responsibilities

  • Delivers third party certification courses as a qualified Instructor trainer within scope of practice including, but not limited to, AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor, NOLS Wilderness First Aid, Leave No Trace Master Trainer
  • Arrive on time to scheduled course or training; ensure that programs begin and end on time
  • Clean and organize equipment after each class, clinic and special event
  • Complete all forms associated with specific class, clinic or program
  • Enforce indoor program policies and procedures
  • Maintain current knowledge of ASI and Campus Recreation programs and services
  • Assist with Adventures Attendant training
  • Attend trainings, meetings and workshops as required
  • Maintain open communication with the Adventure Education Coordinator
  • Respond to emergencies and injuries and provide care as required until the arrival of emergency medical services
  • Perform other duties as assigned including, but not limited to facilitating instructor trainings, and consulting within scope of practice.
