About The Position

Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) is a non-profit corporation established in 1963, guided by a student board and managed by full-time professional staff. ASI serves the campus population by providing opportunities for student engagement, employment, and programs/services in recreation, wellness, student union, activities, student government, and childcare. ASI also provides operational support in human resources, financial services, IT, facilities management, and marketing. ASI employees embody values of integrity, honor, dedication, loyalty, and respect. Since 2014, ASI Adventures has offered recreational opportunities to Cal Poly Pomona students, focusing on technical and experiential programming in indoor and outdoor disciplines. Through wilderness outings, a rock wall, a Gear Rental Center, workshops, and certification courses, Adventures fosters a community that embraces inclusivity, learning, and lifelong hobbies.

Requirements

  • Minimum three years of formal teaching and/or instructing experience.
  • Current certification provider status for one or more of the following programs: AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor, AMGA Single Pitch Instructor, NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Aid, NOLS Wilderness Medicine Wilderness First Responder, LNT Master Trainer, ACA Kayak I or II.
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.
  • Outstanding customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to act calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to follow routine verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain professional work conduct.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and make recommendations.
  • Ability to adhere to work rules, follow directions, use time effectively, and work productively without close supervision.
  • Ability to operate a computer workstation using word processing, spreadsheet, and other computer applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and campus community.
  • Must be a Cal Poly Pomona student eligible to work, enrolled in a minimum of 6.0 units (undergraduate) or 4.0 units (graduate), with a minimum overall and Cal Poly Pomona GPA of 2.0.
  • Must sign an Acknowledgment of Mandated Reporter Status and Legal Duty to Report Child Abuse and Neglect.

Responsibilities

  • Delivers third-party certification courses as a qualified Instructor trainer within scope of practice (e.g., AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor, NOLS Wilderness First Aid, Leave No Trace Master Trainer).
  • Arrives on time to scheduled courses or training and ensures programs begin and end on time.
  • Cleans and organizes equipment after each class, clinic, and special event.
  • Completes all forms associated with specific classes, clinics, or programs.
  • Enforces indoor program policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of ASI and Campus Recreation programs and services.
  • Assists with Adventures Attendant training.
  • Attends trainings, meetings, and workshops as required.
  • Maintains open communication with the Adventure Education Coordinator.
  • Responds to emergencies and injuries and provides care until the arrival of emergency medical services.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including facilitating instructor trainings and consulting within scope of practice.
