About The Position

Reporting directly to the Maintenance Supervisor, the Advance Technologies Technician (“ATT”) is a qualified and competent A-level mechanic with the additional skills, knowledge, certifications, experience and competencies to capably perform service, diagnostics, preventative and functional maintenance and repair on SunLine Transit Agency’s (“Agency”) fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Hydrogen-powered, and Electric Buses (“Alternative Fuel Vehicles” or AFV), as well as other Agency revenue and non-revenue fleet vehicles. The incumbent in this role must demonstrate the ability to work with little to no supervision, and have knowledge of principles, practices and methods of repair of advanced technology bus systems and equipment. The ATT shall apply his/her knowledge, skills and experience with alternative fuel technologies, to include, but not limited to, hydrogen fuel cells, as well as high-voltage and low-voltage systems (“Alternative Fuel Technology, “AFT”) and AFVs, commonly found in modern transit buses, and perform testing, diagnostics, and preventative maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications to ensure the operability, serviceability and readiness of the Agency’s fleet of ATV. The ATT may also provide advice, guidance and direction pertaining to appropriate diagnostics, servicing and repair of fleet vehicles equipped with AFT, as well as onboard electronic systems to include, but not limited to, CAD/AVL systems, radios, head signs, video systems, etc.

Requirements

• Must meet the established minimum qualifications for the Mechanic A position
• Knowledge in electric drive systems and hydrogen fuel cell
• Knowledge of computer programs for electric drive systems and components
• Experience in heavy duty fleet maintenance
• At least 3 years of experience working with ATV using hydrogen-powered, CNG, or fuel cell technologies associated with typical heavy duty zero-emissions vehicles, as well as systems including, but not limited to, CAD/AVL, VOIP, multiplexing, hydrogen propulsion systems, electric propulsion systems, mobile video surveillance.
• Ability to read and understand technical manuals and schematics
• Skillfully and independently operate electronic test equipment
• Must provide basic tools necessary to perform basic functions of position and be familiar with safe use of such tools.
• Must be familiar with the safe operation of machines and equipment which they are authorized and trained to use.
• Must use protective safety equipment in conjunction with applicable activities.

Nice To Haves

• A technical degree or certification in automotive, mechanical or electrical engineering is preferred.
• Certifications regarding ATV and AFV desirable.

Responsibilities

• Perform all the essential functions and duties of the A level bus mechanic as needed and assigned, and perform advanced technology preventive maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on both Revenue and Non-Revenue vehicles.
• Perform scheduled and ad hoc inspections, testing and diagnostics to certify continued serviceability and functionality of the complex physical, mechanical and electronic systems and advanced technologies on the agency’s fleet of ATV. Troubleshoot and perform preventative and corrective maintenance and repairs as needed and required on the mechanical, electronic and functional systems including, but not limited to, computerized engine controls, fuel systems, drive trains, batteries, electronics, hydraulics, coolant and lubrication systems, transmissions and air conditioning systems.
• Collaborate with Parts/Purchasing to acquire, maintain and ensure parts inventory levels of frequently used and/or difficult-to-find parts to ensure repairs can be made efficiently, appropriately and timely.
• Perform all work in accordance with established regulatory, Agency and manufacturer safety standards and operational guideline. Work closely and collaboratively with supervisors, mechanics, and manufactures to ensure the efficient operation of the fleet.
• Complete work orders, submit accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities.
• Adapt to new and emerging electronic, operating, technical and mechanical systems and technology; participate in manufacturer and Agency provided training, learning and development opportunities to ensure the ATT has the necessary competencies and remains technically relevant to effect required and necessary preventative maintenance, assessments, repairs and evaluations to ensure fleet readiness and availability.
• Assists with coaching, mentoring, skill development and learning opportunities for other mechanics and maintenance staff to ensure staff is competent to confidently and capably perform required service and repairs on advanced technology vehicles.
• Perform other functions, tasks and duties as requested by management.
• Perform the functions and duties of an A-level mechanic when requested to do so by management.
