Advanced Software Engineer – Forge AI & Platform

Honeywell•Atlanta, GA

About The Position

Honeywell is seeking an Advanced Software Engineer to build and evolve enterprise-scale platform services supporting Honeywell Forge and the Cognition platform. This hands-on engineering role contributes across user experiences, APIs, backend services, distributed systems, data and messaging infrastructure, and containerized deployments. The engineer owns features and services from design and implementation through automated testing, deployment, integration, troubleshooting, and production readiness, working with technical leads, architects, SRE, cybersecurity, QA, product, and other engineering teams. The position reports to the Sr Software Engineering Manager and is based in Atlanta, Georgia, on a hybrid work schedule. The role develops containerized microservices and distributed platform components that can operate across Azure, GCP, Alibaba Cloud, Cognition, and edge or appliance environments, including those with limited or restricted connectivity. Work includes service interfaces and APIs, event-driven services, database and storage integrations, Kubernetes deployments, and platform installation and lifecycle-management capabilities. The engineer is expected to consider resource use and applicable engineering and security requirements for regulated, restricted-connectivity, and air-gapped deployments. The role requires substantial hands-on software development experience and the ability to independently design and deliver moderately complex components. The engineer translates technical designs into production-quality software, contributes to architecture discussions and code reviews, identifies risks and integration concerns, troubleshoots issues across distributed services and infrastructure, and supports technical investigations and proof-of-concepts.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software-development experience with substantial hands-on development responsibility.
  • Strong experience building production-quality backend, full-stack, or platform software.
  • Experience developing services using microservice, API-driven, and distributed-system architectures.
  • Practical experience with containerized applications, automated testing, and CI/CD.
  • Ability to independently design and deliver moderately complex software components and features.
  • Experience troubleshooting applications and distributed services in development, integration, or production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with modern full-stack application development and web application architecture.
  • Experience with RESTful APIs, backend service development, .NET, and C#.
  • Knowledge of microservices, distributed-system concepts, event-driven architecture, and asynchronous processing.
  • Experience with RabbitMQ or comparable enterprise messaging technology.
  • Experience with SQL and relational databases, particularly PostgreSQL or comparable platforms.
  • Experience with caching technologies such as Redis and data-processing and persistence concepts.
  • Knowledge of authentication, authorization, and secure API design.
  • Experience with automated unit, API, component, and integration testing.
  • Knowledge of observability, structured logging, and production troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Git-based development, branching, pull-request, and release workflows.
  • Must be a U.S. Person as defined in the posting, or have the ability to obtain export authorization.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with industrial IoT or connected-device platforms.
  • Experience with edge computing or appliance-based software.
  • Experience with hybrid-cloud or multi-cloud platforms.
  • Experience with air-gapped or restricted-connectivity environments.
  • Experience with large-scale telemetry or event-processing systems.
  • Experience with Kubernetes-based edge deployments.
  • Experience with time-series databases.
  • Experience with device and gateway management.
  • Experience with secure software-development lifecycle practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop containerized microservices and distributed platform components.
  • Implement service interfaces, APIs, contracts, and reusable abstractions.
  • Develop event-driven services using RabbitMQ or similar messaging technologies and asynchronous processing patterns.
  • Build services that interact with relational databases, time-series data stores, caching technologies, and file or object storage.
  • Implement reliable service-to-service communication, error handling, retry, and integration patterns.
  • Troubleshoot issues across distributed services and their dependencies.
  • Develop software for deployment across Azure, GCP, Alibaba Cloud, and Cognition environments.
  • Contribute to a common platform codebase while separating common functionality from provider-specific implementations.
  • Apply abstraction and adapter patterns to limit unnecessary cloud-provider dependencies.
  • Develop software for Cognition edge and appliance environments, including deployments with limited or restricted connectivity.
  • Build platform components with consideration for CPU, memory, storage, and network utilization.
  • Develop and support services deployed in Kubernetes-based environments.
  • Contribute to installation, configuration, upgrade, and lifecycle-management capabilities for platform services.
  • Follow engineering and security requirements for regulated, restricted-connectivity, or air-gapped deployments.
  • Own assigned features, services, and technical problems with limited supervision.
  • Translate technical designs and requirements into high-quality working software.
  • Participate in architecture and design discussions and provide thoughtful code reviews.
  • Collaborate with technical leads, architects, Product Owners, SRE, cybersecurity, QA, and application teams.
  • Identify technical risks, dependencies, maintainability concerns, and integration issues early.
  • Diagnose technical issues across applications, services, messaging, databases, Kubernetes, and infrastructure.
  • Contribute to technical investigations and proof-of-concepts for new technologies or platform capabilities.

Benefits

  • Employer-subsidized medical, dental, vision, and life insurance.
  • Short-term and long-term disability coverage.
  • 401(k) match.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts and Health Savings Accounts.
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
  • Educational assistance.
  • Parental leave.
  • Paid time off for vacation, personal business, sick time, and parental leave.
  • 12 paid holidays.
