About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Walk-In Clinics is seeking an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) to primarily support their Iowa City/Corridor Walk-In Clinics (Urgent Care/Quick Care Clinics). ARNPs perform direct patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic services. UI Walk-in Clinics provide care to save patients a trip to the emergency room and are open evenings, weekends, and holidays. The clinics assess a wide variety of patients from newborn to geriatric, ensuring patient care standards are met and providing access to additional care options not normally found at a traditional walk-in clinic, including X-rays, IV fluids, and stitches. This position is part of a dynamic and fast-paced environment with opportunities for learning and growth, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach to patient care that encourages teamwork. The position will mainly support Iowa City/Corridor sites but could also support other service lines/clinics based on clinical needs/hours, including Quad Cities clinic sites.

Requirements

  • Master's degree is required. A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred. If Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
  • Current board certification (FNP) in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
  • Current license to practice as an ARNP in state of Iowa.
  • Minimum 6 months experience as an ARNP.
  • Demonstrated experience in area of clinical practice is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage acutely ill patient population (of all ages) within a highly functioning unit/department.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Proved capacity to function with a high degree of autonomy while actively collaborating within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively in a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
  • Current valid driver’s license and the ability to meet the University Driving Policy Standards.
  • Availability to provide support at other clinical locations based on clinical hours/needs.
  • BLS, ACLS and PALS certification (obtained within first 6 months of employment).

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum 1 year of acute patient care ARNP experience within Emergency Department, Urgent Care and/or Walk-In Clinic area(s), or Family Medicine.
  • Some knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Previous EPIC experience.
  • Comfortable with technology and leveraging video, or the desire to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Provide care responsibilities in both QuickCare and Urgent Care Clinics, rotating clinical sites.
  • Obtain medical history and perform physical examination.
  • Assess, assist, diagnose and treat medical or surgical problems and record findings.
  • Perform or assist in and interpret the performance of laboratory and related studies.
  • Perform therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, the suturing and care of wounds, removal of foreign bodies, ear and eye irrigation and other clinical procedures.
  • Assist in arranging for continued care such as transfer to the Emergency Treatment Center; follow-up care or establishment of care with a primary care provider; and/or follow-up consultations (including referrals to appropriate specialty and subspecialty physicians as indicated by patients’ problems).
  • Perform and screen results of special medical exams including electrocardiogram, radiography, audiometric and vision screening, tonometry, and pulmonary function screening tests.
  • Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease, therapy, and normal growth and development.
  • Evaluate, treat and institute procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to urgent medical problems.
  • Maintain awareness of health facilities, agencies and resources in order to facilitate the appropriate referral of patients.
  • Order medications and administer drugs.
  • Direct other medical personnel and health professionals in the execution of patient care.
  • Perform duties appropriate to a physician’s practice.
  • Participate in educating health care students in various programs.
  • Participate in committees within the division, department, College of Medicine and University of Iowa Health Care.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned on a permanent or temporary basis.
  • Exercise autonomy in medical decision making and services provided.
  • Assist in educating healthcare students, as they rotate through the respective departments and divisions.
  • Assist in research endeavors as appropriate.
