About The Position

Under general supervision, supervises the day to day schedules of the Advanced Practitioners and assists the Director in the overall administrative management of the team. This role involves establishing work schedules, maintaining safe staffing levels, acting as a shift resource, and collaborating with leadership on personnel budgets, recruitment, retention, and performance monitoring. The position also includes monitoring time and attendance, communicating performance issues, and assuming other duties as assigned. Additionally, the role involves the initial evaluation and treatment of admitted and triage patients, performing history and physicals, writing orders, discussing findings with attending physicians and nursing staff, evaluating patient progress, making daily rounds, writing progress notes, and establishing medical diagnoses. The practitioner will refer complex cases to the attending physician, perform technical functions within their scope, document clinical functions, monitor patient response, contribute to safe and quality care, and participate in performance improvement initiatives. The role also encompasses patient and family education, health teaching, planning home care instructions, and maintaining communication with health team members regarding patient education and discharge planning. The practitioner is expected to pursue educational advancement and attend mandatory in-services.

Requirements

  • Licensed as a Physician Assistant, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, or as an Adult Nurse Practitioner by the Board of Medical Examiners of Maryland / Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses.
  • Certification as required.
  • Completion of "Healthcare Provider" CPR course.
  • Completion of “Healthcare Provider” ACLS course.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills required to effectively interact with staff, physicians, patients, and family members.
  • Ability to work under varying degrees of stress and the ability to adjust to changes in the work environment.
  • Analytical skills in order to assess patients and implement appropriate intervention.
  • Effective skills in use of computer programs (AtStaff, EPIC, Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Advanced skill in organizing assignments and activities of others for the overall benefit and smooth operation of the shift.
  • Skill in allocating advanced practitioner resources to provide smooth and efficient, high quality care to the patients assigned.
  • Able to delegate assignments and provide direction to advanced practitioner personnel.
  • Demonstrates competency in the delivery of care and applies the knowledge to meet age-specific needs if applicable.

Responsibilities

  • Establishes work schedules and assignments for the team of advanced practitioners including orientation schedules and required competency participation.
  • Maintains safe, adequate shift staffing levels.
  • Acts as a shift resource and ensures that assigned shift staff have adequate tools and resources in order to provide high quality patient care.
  • Collaborates with the Department Chairman and Director in fostering a positive work environment as evidenced by staff morale, turnover rates and/or vacancy rates.
  • Collaborates with the Department Chairman and Director on the personnel budget, recruitment and retention of personnel, and the on going monitoring of performance of personnel.
  • Monitors time and attendance of staff and delivers corrective action per HR protocols.
  • Communicates any job performance issues to Director.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned.
  • Assumes responsibility for the initial evaluation and treatment of admitted and triage patients.
  • Performs admission history and physical as evidenced by appropriate documentation.
  • Writes standard orders in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Writes appropriate orders related to pre-existing conditions.
  • Discusses with the attending physician and nursing staff physical and/or emotional findings which may interfere with care.
  • Evaluates patient progress on a continuing basis and in collaboration with the attending physician; alters treatment modalities.
  • Makes daily rounds on assigned patients.
  • Writes progress notes at least daily, documenting pertinent information regarding patient progress and treatment regime.
  • Writes orders appropriate to the patient’s care requirements in compliance with hospital policy.
  • Establishes medical diagnoses in compliance with standard medical accepted medical practice.
  • Refers to the attending physician or designee those problems which require consultation and documents same on progress note.
  • Makes immediate referral of acute and/or life threatening patient conditions to attending physician or designee. Documents physical findings and treatment plan pertaining to same.
  • Performs technical functions as covered by the job description and delegation agreement submitted to BPQA and/or MBON, approved NP agreement and in accordance with hospital policy.
  • Documents results of clinical functions performed.
  • Reports to physician or designee any abnormal findings related to same.
  • Monitors patient response related to clinical function performed and documents same.
  • Contributes to safe and quality care.
  • Functions within hospital policy, procedure and safety standards.
  • Adheres to scientific principles related to performance of therapeutic measures.
  • Acts as a clinical resource.
  • Actively supports and participates in nursing and/or hospital performance improvement initiatives.
  • Performs activities to meet patient/family educational needs.
  • Participates actively in health teaching of patient and family to include preventative health care, as well as, current medical condition and treatment regime. Evidence of same by documentation on progress note and/or established flow sheet.
  • Plans and reviews home care instructions with patient and family if needed. Includes needs for service provided by community resources and hospital based ancillary services.
  • Maintains continual communication with health team members regarding patient education and discharge planning.
  • Assumes responsibility for utilizing opportunities for educational advancement by pursuing activities to meet identified educational needs and those required for continued certification as well as attending mandatory in service as required.
