About The Position

Provides medical care for pediatric general surgery patients across their continuum of care in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. This is a Part-Time position working 20 hours per week with a specific schedule outlined. The role involves health promotion, illness prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of common health problems and acute and chronic conditions. Responsibilities include assessing patients, ordering diagnostic tests, synthesizing data, and applying advanced nursing principles. The position also involves coordinating patient care, assisting with operative care (pre-operative work-up, post-operative care, intra-operative assistance), identifying and mitigating patient barriers to care, and participating in process improvement initiatives. The role requires collaboration with various healthcare professionals to promote quality and safe patient care, fostering professionalism, supporting team and patient care through documentation, and promoting a culture of safety. The role may also involve assisting with research projects and training learners, as well as providing patient care and education specific to the pediatric population served.

Requirements

• Registered Nurse with a minimum of 3 years of experience in a health care setting required.
• Master's Degree in Nursing with previous clinical experience in a health care setting required.
• Minimum 1 year of APNR experience required.
• Licensed as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the State of Nebraska, Acute Care Certified (ACCNP) required.
• Current BLS certification required.
• PALS certification within 6 months of transfer or hire required.
• Working knowledge of using a personal computer and electronic medical record required.
• Ability to cover weekends and holidays based on a rotating schedule required.
• Ability to demonstrate competence in providing direct patient care and patient and family education.
• Ability to communicate with patients, families and staff, and collaborate with other members of the health care team to enhance care.
• Ability to make assessments and problem solve.
• Ability to work autonomously while recognizing when to consult with other members of the health care team.
• Ability to keep complete records of all events and results of patient encounters in a timely manner.
• Ability to be a strong patient advocate.

Responsibilities

• Practices health promotion, health supervision, illness prevention and diagnosis, treatment, and management of common health problems and acute and chronic conditions.
• Assesses patients, orders diagnostic tests and therapeutic treatments, synthesizes and analyzes data, and applies advanced nursing principles.
• May perform and/or assist with other diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as trained within scope of practice and/or in collaboration with the attending physician.
• Participates in multidisciplinary rounds.
• Coordinates patient care with other ancillary needed services inpatient and outpatient.
• Coordinates operative care to provide: necessary pre-operative work-up, clearance, and admissions as needed; preoperative orders, history and physicals, post-operative care, orders, consults; intra-operative assistance and coordination of needed equipment and medications.
• Identifies patient barriers to care and proactively develops plans to mitigate these factors.
• Works to improve care through process improvement.
• Works collaboratively with nursing staff, respiratory therapy staff, and other departments to promote quality and safe patient care.
• Promotes professionalism within the pediatric care team, other departments, families and patients.
• Supports team and patient care through thorough documentation and preparation.
• Promotes a culture of safety and a non-punitive environment.
• Attends appropriate committee meetings and educational functions of BTNRH, as required.
• Assists with identification of subjects for research projects.
• Assists with training of all learners, as needed.
• Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.
• Serves as a role model in carrying out activities and behaviors that reflect the values and principles of the Boys Town mission.
