About The Position

High Plains Mental Health Center is seeking an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) to join their groundbreaking Crisis Intervention Center (CIC) in Hays, Kansas. This 24/7 inpatient facility is one of Kansas's first of its kind, playing a vital role in transforming mental health care by easing the burden on local hospitals and law enforcement, shortening inpatient waitlists, and providing critical mental health services close to home. The CIC offers multiple shifts and a variety of career opportunities for those looking to make a significant impact in mental health care.

Requirements

  • Current licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in the state of Kansas, with prescriptive authority.
  • Minimum 1 year of psychiatric/mental health experience.
  • CPR and First Aid certified (provided by our Center).
  • Demonstrated ability to assess/manage psychiatric emergencies.
  • Strong foundation in psychopharmacology, crisis stabilization, and trauma-informed care.
  • Completion of required health screenings (TB testing, mental & medical clearance).
  • Successful background checks (KBI and KDADS).

Nice To Haves

  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) Board Certification, or commitment to acquiring PMHNP-BC.
  • 3+ years of psychiatric/mental health experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychiatric assessments and diagnose mental health and co-occurring substance use disorders.
  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, and monitor therapeutic response and side effects.
  • Deliver evidence-based crisis intervention and trauma-informed care.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, nurses, case managers, and behavioral health staff to develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Lead efforts in suicide prevention, risk assessment, and behavioral de-escalation.
  • Contribute to discharge planning, continuity of care, and patient education.
  • Ensure compliance with Kansas regulations regarding mental health, seclusion/restraint, and crisis protocols.
  • Participate in team training, emergency preparedness, and facility policy development.
  • Mentor nursing staff and support a culture of clinical excellence and safety.
