About The Position
Alaska Rural Staffing Services (ARSS) partners with various healthcare organizations across Alaska, including rural hospitals, clinics, Tribal health organizations, and community health centers, to find experienced advanced practice providers (APPs). These professionals are crucial for maintaining healthcare access in rural, remote, and frontier communities. ARSS is currently seeking individuals for active and upcoming opportunities such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and nurse midwives throughout Alaska. These roles can be found in diverse settings like Critical Access Hospitals, Rural Health Clinics, Federally Qualified Health Centers, Tribal health organizations, village clinics, and more. Many of these communities may only be accessible by air, water, or seasonal transportation. APPs in rural Alaska are vital, often being one of the few local healthcare providers. They deliver primary and preventive care, support emergency and inpatient services, manage chronic conditions, coordinate medical evacuations, and help maintain essential community services. The ideal rural Alaska APP is collaborative, resourceful, culturally respectful, clinically confident, and comfortable practicing independently while staying connected to a wider network of healthcare professionals. Flexibility, creativity, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to build trust within close-knit communities are key. Opportunities range from traditional clinic schedules in road-system communities to village travel, rotational schedules, inpatient coverage, emergency care, call responsibilities, specialty services, leadership duties, per diem work, or short-term staffing support.
Requirements
- Current nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or applicable advanced practice licensure
- Eligibility for Alaska licensure
- National certification in the relevant specialty
- Current DEA registration when required
- Relevant clinical experience
- Strong communication, collaboration, adaptability, and professional judgment
- The ability to work independently while remaining connected to the broader care team
- The ability to make sound clinical decisions in settings where immediate specialty resources may not be available
- Experience serving rural, remote, frontier, underserved, or medically complex populations
- Experience with Critical Access Hospitals, Rural Health Clinics, FQHCs, Tribal health organizations, community hospitals, regional health systems, or village-based healthcare programs
- Experience using telehealth or coordinating care across significant geographic distances
- Respect for Alaska Native cultures, local traditions, community priorities, and the unique needs of each region
- A patient-centered, dependable, flexible, and community-minded approach
Responsibilities
- Providing safe, high-quality, patient-centered, and culturally respectful care
- Evaluating, diagnosing, treating, and managing patients within the scope of the role
- Supporting primary care, urgent care, emergency, inpatient, specialty, women's health, or behavioral health services
- Providing preventive care, chronic disease management, acute care, and patient education
- Serving patients across the lifespan, sometimes within a broad rural or frontier scope of practice
- Collaborating with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, community health aides, behavioral health professionals, emergency transport teams, and other members of the care team
- Supporting continuity of care across village clinics, regional hospitals, specialty centers, and community-based services
- Coordinating referrals, medical travel, specialty consultations, telehealth services, and transitions of care
- Participating in call, weekend, rotational, or block-schedule coverage when required
- Traveling between communities or clinics when part of the position
- Providing short-term or per diem support during vacancies, leave, seasonal demand, or increased patient needs
- Helping expand access to care in rural, remote, underserved, and frontier communities
- Supporting quality, safety, documentation, credentialing, and regulatory standards
- Responding to urgent clinical needs with limited onsite resources when required
- Building trusted relationships with patients, families, employees, Tribal leaders, community partners, and regional healthcare organizations
